Intro

The Jackson Heights Cobras take on the Oskaloosa Bears in a one-sided girls' game being followed up by in the night a heart-racing boys' matchup. Most high school teams start their Monday off with a practice for their Tuesday game, but tonight the Cobras decided they'd start their week with a thrilling varsity sweep!

Girls - Jackson Heights vs Oskaloosa (61-32)

The Cobra Girls have won twenty-two straight games against the Oskaloosa Bears. The last time the Bears won was two years before the NEKL was even established and both JH and OSKI faced off in the Delaware Valley league. Tonight the bears were looking to finally come out of their hibernation and take down the Cobra Girls, but Head Coach Madison Macy had her Lady Cobras prepared. The Cobras won the first quarter 18-13 and finished the first half up 34-22. Most of this success was thanks to the Cochren sisters, Chesnea and Dawson, who put on an absolute show not only in the paint but beyond the arch. Chesnea Cochren, the Sophmore sister, won my player of the game with fifteen points, three three-pointers, and ending the game with a double-double. The older sister and Senior, Dawson Cochren, chipped in with her sixteen total points and her assistance in the rebound game. Junior Taylor Bosley had a stellar first half going three-for-three around the permitter for nine total points. The Senior who had once been an honorable mention in the NEKL All-League, Lex Messale, led the Bears with nine points. The Lady Cobras were able to Dominate the last two quarters outscoring the Bears 27-10 in the second half and finishing the game 61-32.

Boys - Jackson Heights vs Oskaloosa (51-50)

A Race for the top of the Boys' NEKL Basketball League continues with the makeup matchup with the Cobras taking on the Bears at home. Fourth-year head coach for the Mighty Cobras, Coach Plattner, has not lost to the Bears since he entered coaching for the Jackson Heights Cobras. The Bears came into the night with one of the better teams they've had in recent years on their Men's side. Oskaloosa stepped into tonight being 7-5 overall and 5-3 in NEKL play. The Game started with Oskaloosa taking the first point to go up a mighty 1-0 but then fell to the Cobras on an 8-1 run early in the first quarter. The first quarter ended 17-9 with the half ending 26-17, however, with a minute left before half the Cobras had only been up 21-17. Entering the second half the Bears weren't going to go down without a fight, they were able to outscore the Cobras in the third quarter 19-9 and went into the final eight minutes of play up by one, 36-35. In the fourth quarter, both teams traded leads numerous times, but Jackson Heights was able to come up on top. In the final seconds of play, Plattner drew up an inbounds play down 50-48 to go to Drakes Mellies at the top of the wing, which the young sophomore took for a layup and got the and one. Mellies sealed the game with an iced free throw shot when the game was tied fifty all, to put the Cobras up by one to win 51-50. Drake Mellies won my player of the game with twenty-four total points, five-for-eight at the free throw line, at least six rebounds, the game-winning shot, and the game-ending pick. On a positive note for the Bears, Trenton Vanhouton finished the game with sixteen points and Brodie Wright had nine points in just the first half.

Summary

The Jackson Heights Cobras showed a lot today with their two varsity wins. The Cobras girls will look to continue to stay competitive in NEKL play moving up to 4-5. The Cobras Boys will reclaim second in NEKL play with their now 7-2 league record. The Oskaloosa boys will fall to 5-4 in NEKL play and the Oski Girls will fall to 4-5. Jackson Heights varsity teams will continue to play this week with Pleasant Ridge on Tuesday and Maur Hill on Friday, which will be on KNZA 103.9.
