Nemaha Valley Lady Raiders Roll Past Horton to Continue in Sub-State

The weather didn't deter a few teams from getting sub-state basketball action underway last night in the state of Kansas, as a few teams braved the predicted weather and hit the court.

The lady Raiders of Nemaha Valley played host to the lady Chargers of Horton in the first round of Class 3A Hiawatha sub-state action in the four versus five matchup and it was the Raiders continuing their season behind a 45-25 win over the Chargers.

Nemaha Valley started the game off with a bang behind a pair of three-pointers by Jill Swart but the Chargers stayed in the game behind six first quarter points by Sarah Coversup that put the Horton deficit at 13-9 after the first period. Each team traded blows in the second stanza with Horton taking the lead for a bit, but Nemaha Valley ended the first half on a mini run sparked by their pressure defense to give them a six-point cushion at the half 23-17.

Coming out of the half the Raiders used a 12-4 third quarter to balloon their lead up to double figures and didn't look back their as they put up a 10-5 fourth quarter to close out the game.

Raiders pressure defense was the story of the game forcing the Chargers into multiple turnovers throughout the game.

Jill Swart paced the way for Nemaha Valley with 13 points, connecting on three three-pointer's while her sister Jaci Swart chipped in 12 points. Horton was led by Sarah Coversup who tallied 12 points.

With the win Nemaha Valley improved to 13-8 on the season and continue on in sub-state action as they will play the number one seed ACCHS Tigers Thursday at Hiawatha in one half of the semifinals. While Horton's season comes to a close with the loss as they finish 11-9 on the year.
