Onaga Boys Advance to Sub-State Semi's with Win Over McLouth

After being delayed a few days due to the weather the Onaga Buffaloes and McLouth Bulldogs finally hit the hardwood for a battle in sub-state play and a battle it was between the four and five seed.

Each team traded blows early in the contest with McLouth leading it 10-9 after the first period but Onaga fired back to tie the game going into the half, 24-24. Coming out the half Onaga used a run to take the lead which they held for most of the second half, ending the third period up by three points. Then the scoring opened up in the fourth for both teams but the Buffaloes used late free throws to close out the quarter 24-18 and win the game 65-56 and advance on in the Class 2A , Oskaloosa sub-state.

Buffaloes used clutch free throw shooting down the stretch and four players in double figures to secure the tough win over the Bulldogs. Onaga ended the matchup hoisting 49 free throw attempts, making 31 good for a 63% night from the charity strip.

Leading the way on the floor for the Buffaloes was senior, Mitchell Kufahl who tallied 15 points, hitting 7-10 of his free throws. The sophomore trio of Jarod Gronewoller, Wyatt Cordell and Michael Bliss all hit the double figure plateau, also on the night. Gronewoller posted 12 points, half of which came via the free throw line, Cordell added 11 points and Bliss chipped in 10, while going 7-8 from the free throw line.

For McLouth in the loss they were lead by a stellar performance at the hands of senior, Carter Gish who tallied 22 points on the night, including a 10 point second quarter.

With the win Onaga improves to 12-9 on the season and continues their postseason, setting up a matchup against the number one seeded, Valley Falls Dragons. Onaga lost to Valley Falls 50-42 early this season and 48-47 in last years sub-state semifinals, also. McLouth ends their season 10-10 on the year with the loss.
