Hiawatha Girls and Jefferson West Boys Land Big East League Wins

The Hiawatha girls and Jefferson West boys earned Big East League wins on Friday night, Jan. 17 in our featured broadcasts on 103.9 KNZA. 

Girls: Hiawatha 48, Jefferson West 41

The Jefferson West girls jumped out to an early 10-3 lead in the first quarter but the Redhawks would respond with a 15-0 into the second quarter. 

Hiawatha would close the first half on a 20-5 run to lead the game 23-15 at halftime. The Tigers outscored the Redhawks by four in the third quarter to trail by only four going into the fourth quarter. 

The Redhawks would outscore the Tigers 16-13 in the fourth quarter to hold on for the win.

Kylie Nelson and Alija Contreras each scored 15 points to lead Hiawatha. The two combined for nine rebounds and five three-pointers. 

Harriet Dean led Jefferson West with 14 points while Kaylee Heinen added 11 points. The Redhawks improved to 5-3 overall (3-1 Big East) while the Tigers dropped to 3-5 overall (1-4 Big East). 

Boys: Hiawatha 48, Jefferson West 52

This game was close throughout from the jump and was exciting thru all four quarters. 

The Tigers led 11-10 after the first quarter and then would lead the game 21-19 at halftime. Jefferson West would add to their lead in the third quarter as it was 39-34 going into the fourth quarter. 

Jefferson West opened up an eight point lead early in the fourth quarter but the Redhawks would battle back and get within a single possession in the final few minutes. 

Daniel Brown for Jefferson West led all scorers with 18 points while going 4-for-4 at the line down the stretch to help the Tigers hold on for the win. 

Conner Reich added 10 points for the Tigers while Lane Kesler led the Redhawks with 11 points while Ethan Morton and Michael Jensen each finished with nine points. 

The win for Jefferson West snapped a three-game losing streak as they improved to 4-4 overall (2-3 Big East) while the Redhawks dropped to 2-6 overall (1-3 Big East).
