The Nemaha Central boys basketball team secured the first ever Big East league championship on Friday night after winning at Riley County in double overtime 72-65.
The title came down to three teams heading into the final night of action with Nemeha Central, Silver Lake, and St. Marys.
There was a scenario in place with a potential of a three-way tie between the teams but St. Marys lost their game at Hiawatha.
Silver Lake won their matchup against Royal Valley so both Silver Lake and NC finished with league records of 8-2.
However, since Nemaha Central defeated Silver Lake earlier in the season, the Thunder won the tiebreaker and secured the championship.
The Thunder are the #7 ranked team in Class 3A with an overall record of 15-2 and will close out the regular season with games against Olpe, Concordia, and Sabetha.
