NEK Legion Baseball Weekend Recap -- June 8th & 9th

Full slate of legion baseball action of the weekend with the teams in the Northeast Kansas league in action in non-league and league games.

On Saturday, three NEK teams were in action with two against each other and the other in a non-league matchup. The 2013 NEK league tournament champs went out on the road to take on Atchison in a league matchup and it was a battle with Seneca coming up with eight of their nine runs in the sixth and seventh to grab the 9-4 win.

Doniphan County was the other NEK team in action as they hosted Auburn in a non-league contest. It was a tight ballgame that went to extra's to decide it and Auburn grabbed the 4-3 win in nine. Twice in the game Doniphan County found themselves with the winning run in scoring position but were unable to score. In the seventh the winning run as on third with two outs for Doniphan County but they couldn't score. Then in the ninth the tying run was on third and the winning run on second but failed to score again and fell in the contest.

On Sunday, Sabetha took on Valley Falls in a double header, while Frankfort had a double header against Marysville. The other two double headers on the day featured NEK league teams against each other with Doniphan County hosting Holton and Royal Valley versus Atchison.

Sabetha started their double header off with a tight win in 10 innings behind a walk-off single to grab a 7-6 win over Valley Falls. Valley Falls then earned the split by winning the nightcap 9-2 over Sabetha. The other non-league double header, Frankfort versus Marysville scores are yet to be reported.

In the league contests on Sunday, Doniphan County and Holton postponed their games with a reschedule date to be determined, while Royal Valley and Atchison squared off.

Atchison claimed two victories over Royal Valley in a doubleheader. In the first game, the offense clicked for Atchison, winning 12-2. The second game was much closer, though, but the outcome was still the same with Atchision winning 6-5.

Atchison Bounces Back With Victories Over Royal Valley

Atchison didn't waste time in the first showdown, only using five innings to win 12-2.

The A's first three batters loaded the bases for Jimmy Priest who drove in two runners on a double. Atchison added four more runs to lead 6-1 after the first inning. In the second, the A's tallied three more runs off a three RBI triple by Mark McDermed. Jimmy Priest went 2-2 with four RBIs and Mark McDermed went 2-3 with four RBIs.

The second game proved to be a much tougher task. Royal Valley scored three runs in the second inning. Atchison quickly responded in the third with a two-RBI single by Jimmy Priest. The A's scored one more run in the inning to tie up the game at three apiece.

Royal Valley scored two runs in the top of the fourth and Atchison responded by scoring one in the bottom frame. The difference was the fifth inning when the A's scored two runs. Royal Valley had two runners in the sixth, but couldn't convert and the A's squeaked out a 6-5 victory.

Jimmy Priest followed his first game performance with three RBIs. Ben Ervin also had an impressive game going 3-3.

Seneca Uses Runs in the Sixth & Seventh to Gain Win Over Atchison

Looking for another win on the season Seneca headed out on the road on Saturday to take on Atchison. It was a tight ballgame with Atchison on top a majority of the game leading 4-1 going into the sixth inning when Seneca broke through.

In the sixth, Seneca tallied a four-run inning to gain the lead and cemented the win with four more runs in the seventh to win 9-4.

Matt Haverkamp registered another multi-hit game this season leading the offense with a 2-3 night with two runs scored, an RBI and walk. Eric Huerter and Alex Rottinghaus joined Haverkamp with multi-hit nights with Huerter adding a pair of RBI and Rottinghaus a pair of runs scored.

With the win Seneca remained unbeaten on the season, improving to 6-0 on the year, while Atchison fell to 2-3 on the season.

 

Auburn Topped Doniphan County in a Nine Inning Battle

Young Doniphan County squad lost a tough one on Saturday when they hosted Auburn in a border showdown. It was a back and forth tight contest that was a pitching duel with Doniphan Counties, Caleb Winkel taking the tough loss on the mound in a 4-3 Auburn win in nine innings.

Doniphan County found themselves in position to grab the win late in the ballgame a couple of times but came up just shy. Tied 3-3 in the seventh Doniphan County with two outs and the winning run at third but failed to score. Then in the ninth trailing by one the tying run was at third and the winning run at second with only one out but Doniphan County again came up just short to fall in the game.

With the loss Doniphan County falls to 3-4 on the season.

 

Sabetha and Valley Falls Duke it Out in Double Header Split

Game one of the double header was an action packed game at Somerset Park between Sabetha and Valley Falls in a non-league showdown.

Sabetha took an early 6-1 lead after two innings of action but Valley Falls chipped away at the lead and tied the game up in the top of the sixth behind a three-run inning. That set up a push down the stretch that culminated in the walk-off RBI single by Graham Howard in the tenth. Howard added that hit to a two-run single he already had in the game and he pitched a 1-2-3 top of the tenth for the win.

Brendon Garrett started the game for Sabetha going nine innings giving up three runs on nine hits and striking out 10. Kyle Stallbaumer added punch to the offense for Sabetha with Howard as Kyle registered three hits and a pair of runs.

In the nightcap it was Valley Falls using two four-run innings in the second and fourth innings to grab a 9-2 win in a schedule five inning affair.

With the split againt Valley Falls, Sabetha moves to 9-3 on the season.
