2018 Legion Baseball Zone Tournament Bracket –
AA Zone (at Wathena), AA Zone (at Russell), AAA Zone (at Topeka)

Postseason play got underway over the weekend for legion baseball and one area team has already punched its ticket to their respective state tournament while one zone tournament has just kicked off.

Leavenworth Post 23 booked its ticket to the AAA State Tournament at Emporia next week, after going 2-0 in the Topeka Tournament to claim the zone one championship. Leavenworth opened up play with a 5-4 win over Ottawa on Saturday, before earning a spot at the state tournament with a 4-1 win over Oskaloosa.

Corning Advances in AA Zone Tournament at Wathena

Behind four errors and eight hits Corning Post 216 advanced to the winners bracket of the AA Zone Tournament at Wathena last night with a 10-2 run-rule victory over Seneca in the tournament’s opening game.

Corning wasted no time jumping out in front scoring two runs in the first inning, as Evan Slater and Quinn Buessing each picked up RBIs while Seneca also committed an error.

Corning went down quietly in the second but tacked on more runs in the third inning, as Post 216 took advantage of two walks and an error to plate three more runs taking a 5-0 lead after three innings.

Seneca was finally able to scrape a run across in the fifth after holding Corning scoreless in the fourth, but Corning plated a run in the fifth and four in the sixth to push the contest out of reach and force the run-rule.

Quinn Buessing was solid on the mound for Corning tossing 5.1 innings allowing just one run on six hits, while Ian Haverkamp was named the McDonald’s “Player of the Game” on 103.9 KNZA after going 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and five RBIs.

The win pushes Corning into the winners bracket where they will take on top-seed Silver Lake Monday night at 8:00, while Seneca is in the losers bracket and await the loser of Doniphan County and Sabetha Tuesday night at 6:00 with all games on 103.9 KNZA.
