Sabetha Takes Second & Doniphan County Fourth in Nebraska/Kansas Legion Border Battle

The Nebraska/Kansas Senior Legion Border Battle in the diamond this weekend in Falls City with three NEK League teams scheduled to partake in the tournament.

Sabetha, Doniphan County and Holton were set up to play each other in the Kansas pool play in the tournament while the host Falls City took on Auburn and Tecumseh in the Nebraska pool play.

Both Sabetha and Doniphan County started pool play with forfeit wins over Holton as they didn't attend the tournament. Inside the of the games versus Holton, both Sabetha and Doniphan County took on a Falls City team made up of some of their junior legion team and some players form their senior legion team. Doniphan County won 17-0 and Sabetha took home a 9-0 win. For Doniphan County Caleb Winkel got the pitching victory while Phoenix Keller had three hits in the contest. Sabetha was highlighted by Kyle Stallbaumer who earned the win on the mound giving up just one-hit and striking out 12.

So, it was down to the matchup between Sabetha and Doniphan County to see who would play in the tournament championship on Sunday. It was scoreless going into the third when Sabetha posted a six-run third frame with Nolan Keim driving in a pair of runs on a bases loaded single, while Taylor Bauman, Keegan Schuman and Tyler Ulrich each added an RBI with their efforts at the plate in the inning.

Doniphan County got two runs back int the fourth, but Sabetha answered with a run in teh bottom of the inning. Graham Howard came in late to work around a pair of walks and an error to stop a potential comeback threat by Doniphan County.

With the win Sabetha moved the tournament championship game and Doniphan County was set up to play for third.

Their opponents were determined earlier in the day as Falls City beat Auburn 1-0 and Tecumseh 15-3 to win their pool. Auburn topped Tecumseh to earn the right to play for third place.

Falls City was highlighted by Derek Bippes earning the win on the mound versus Auburn and Chase Thompson getting a pair of hits and registering the lone RBI. Logan Scheitel earned the win versus Tecumseh, while Lane Scheitel had three hits, including a pair of double's which lead to three RBI. Reese Hogue added a three game, too with a double and two RBI.

On Sunday, it was Auburn taking on Doniphan County for third and Sabetha facing Falls City for the championship.

Auburn capitalized upon Doniphan Counties mistakes to dispatch them 13-3 in five innings for third place, using 10 walks, two hit batters and five Doniphan County errors to help their cause. In the loss Doniphan County did get a 3-3 game from Dylan Gabriel.

Doniphan County overall on the weekend went 2-2 and moved to 14-11 on the season and will next in the diamond on Wednesday at Hiawatha for a double header at 6:00 and 8:00pm. (6pm game will be broadcasted on 103.9 KNZA).

In the championship it was Falls City taking care of business at home to win the tournament with a 5-1 victory over Sabetha. Chase Dunn broke the scoreless tie in the fifth with a two-run double for Falls City; Sabetha tried to respond in the bottom of the inning but stranded runs at second and third.

Sabetha's lone run came in the sixth with a Stallbaumer coming around to score off a Bauman double after his single earlier in the inning. Falls City put some distance between them and Sabetha with a three-run seventh scoring their final two runs on a two-out throwing error. Sabetha was held scoreless in the bottom of the inning falling 5-1.

It was a 3-1 weekend overall for Sabetha in action moving them to 23-11 on the season, as they will look for revenge on Tuesday against Falls City at Somerset Park at 8:00pm.
