Highland Men & Women's Basketball Teams Open Season With Wins

College basketball season opened up well for the Scotties of Highland men and women with wins and the men look to improve upon last year's 16-15 record and the ladies look to continue their success after fifth place at the National tournament last year after a 30-6.

For the lady Scotties they start the season ranked eighth in the NJCAA Division II polls and they've started the season off 2-0 with a pair of wins dispatching Doane College JV last Friday, 90-39 and then taking care of Iowa Lakes CC Saturday 92-39. Ladies Scotties outscored Iowa Lakes 55-19 in the second half after leading by 17 at the half in Saturday's win.

Friday the lady Scotties opened the season by beating Doane JV and had five players in double figures. Julia Alves lead the way with a double-double posting 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Ashley Torres was right behind with 14 points. Celine Jolicoeur posted 12 points and Krystal Corhn and India Johnson each added 10 points apiece in the 90-39 win over Doane JV.

On Saturday the Scotties saw four gals score double figures with 11 ladies scoring at least two points in the win at home over Iowa Lakes CC. Leading the way for Highland was Celine Jolicoeur who tallied 15 points coming off the bench as she was 6-7 from the floor. Julia Alves added 13 points with nine rebounds, while India Johnson tossed in 11 points and Krystal Corhn notched a double-double 11 points and 10 rebounds.

For the men they started their season off at home against Central Methodist and picked up the 78-53 win on Saturday as Martell Collins lit up the scored to lead the way scoring 32 points going 8-13 from the floor and 13-14 from the charity strip, while also grabbing 10 rebounds. Torre Somerville was the lone other Scottie to tally double figures notching 15 points in the victory, Scotties built a 47-24 lead at the half and that proved to be enough of a cushion for the team to start the season 1-0.

Lady Scotties will next hit the court on Tuesday (November 5th) at home against the St. Mary's (Leavenworth) JV squad at 7:00pm, while the men will next hit the court on Friday, November 8th at the KCK Classic versus Ottawa JV at 4:00pm.
