Season Comes to Close for Atchison A's in AAA Legion State Tourney

After a tough loss that wrapped up in the early hours of Thursday, Atchison had to turn around and play at around noon on Thursday afternoon in an elimination game in the AAA State tournament and saw their season come to a close with another one run loss, falling 9-8 to Arkansas City.

Atchison took the early lead scoring one in the bottom of the second inning as Brian Scott had an RBI single to score Quenton Reichart who singled in the inning. Arkansas City tied the game in the top of the third, but Atchison quickly responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third with an RBI double by Chase Behler and an RBI single by Dillon Kramer, making 3-1 through three innings.

Arkansas City tied the game again with two runs in the top of the fourth, but Atchison led 4-3 after four innings was in the books. In the top of the fifth is when Arkansas City took over scoring four runs to take the lead and would not give up it up, adding two more in the top of the seventh.

Atchison tried their best to try for the comeback scoring three in the bottom of the seventh using four hits in the inning and then down to their final three outs down only two runs Atchison got another run in the bottom of the ninth on a Tanner Huntington RBI single, but ultimately couldn't score again falling 9-8.

In the loss Atchison was led by Jake Schmidt, Jonny Kane and Dillon Kramer who each had two hits. Schmidt finished 2-4 with two RBI, a run scored and two walks, Kane tallied a 2-4 game with a run scored and Kramer was 2-5 with two RBI and a walk. Giving up 14 hits and nine walks hurt Atchison, along with four errors.

The loss wraps up the season for the A's who finish the year 14-17 and made the AAA State tournament for the first time since 2011.

(Dodge City beat Salina in the other elimination game 4-2. In the winner's bracket games Pittsburg topped Emporia 14-3 in seven innings, while Hays beat Newton 4-2.)
