After a delay because of Mother Nature the Northeast Kansas League legion baseball tournament got underway on Sunday afternoon with all four first round contests at Somerset park in Sabetha.
Atchison started the day with an 8-0 six inning win over the Sabetha junior legion team, while Seneca finished out the top half of the bracket Semifinals with an 11-3 five inning win over Oskaloosa. In the bottom half of the bracket it was the defending NEKL League tourney champs, Doniphan County beating Frankfort 9-0 in five innings, while Hiawatha edged Sabetha in the closest first round game 13-8.
 
That sets up the Semifinals Monday night (June 8th) starting at 6:00pm with Atchison versus Seneca and then Hiawatha versus Doniphan County at 8:00pm. Atchison Tops Sabetha Junior Legion to Open NEKL Tourney
 
Sunday started off with Atchison taking on the Sabetha junior legion in the opening round of the NEKL tournament and the Atchison A's went on to earn the 8-0 win in six innings.
 
The A's started the action off in the bottom of the first inning plating three runs, including their first run coming on an inside park the home run by Harry Trotter on a misplayed ball by the Sabetha left fielder, while Quentan Riechart added a two RBI single in the inning for an early 3-0 A's lead. Three Atchison pitchers would quit the Sabetha lineup as Trotter, Chase Behler and Cole Siebenmorgan got work on the mound and gave up just one-hit and four walks between them with nine strikeouts. While offensively Atchison added a run in the fourth, three more in the fifth on five singles and RBI single by Behler ended the game in the bottom of the sixth scoring Siebenmorgan who led the inning off with a walk.
 
For Sabetha in the loss Kyle Grimm registered the lone hit, while Trevor Kramer who took the loss was solid on the mound going four and a third giving up six runs on five hits, two walks with four strikeouts. Atchison was led by Riechart offensively as he was 3-3 with a run score and two RBI, Trotter had the only other multi-hit game for the A's going 2-3 with a home run (inside the park) , two runs scored and an RBI.
 
Atchison with the win improved to 3-0 on the season and moves on the Semifinals of the NEKL tournament.
 
Early Offensive Outburst Pushes Seneca to Win over Oskaloosa
 
Seneca wasted no time against Oskaloosa to get on the board and take control of the game as they scored 10 runs on 11 hits in the first two innings and went on to upend Oskaloosa 11-3 in five innings in the first round of the NEKL tournament.
 
Seneca got the bats rolling in the top of the first inning as the used five hits, an Oskaloosa error and a walk to score four runs with a two RBI double by Justice McKernan being the big hit of the inning. Oskaloosa responded in the bottom of the first plating a pair of runs on two walks, a hit batter and RBI double from Ethan Burghart, making it 4-2 after the first. But it was bad news again for Oskaloosa as they switched pitchers in the second inning but it was the same outcome for Seneca as they pounded out six runs on six hits double's by Tim Nolte and Andrew Oller highlighted the inning and it was 10-2 going into the bottom of the second. Only two more runs would be scored in the game as Oskaloosa got on in the third and Seneca added their final run in the fourth going on to get the 11-3 five inning win.
 
Alex Rottinghaus and Dalton Hiltbrand combined to give up just two-hits and four walks to Oskaloosa as Rottinghaus got the win as the starter, while also going 2-4 offensively. Oller led the Seneca 14-hit attack going 3-3 with three doubles, an RBI and two run scored, earning him McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on Kanzaland radio. 
 
Oskaloosa struggled with pitching early with Burghart and Bryce Stottlemire but Dalton VanHoutan settled in pitching the final three innings only giving up one-run on three hits with one walk. Josh Lutze and Burghart were the only Oskaloosa players to register a hit in the contest.
 
The win makes Seneca 2-1 on the season and pushes them into the Semifinals, while Oskaloosa falls to 2-1 on the season with the loss.
 
Keller's Strong Showing Helps Doniphan County Down Frankfort
 
The defending NEKL tournament champs, Doniphan County wasted no time taking control of their first round game with a big first inning and went on to earn the 9-0 five inning win over Frankfort.
 
Frankfort started the game by getting a pair of early base runners via walks off of Phoenix Keller of Doniphan County but they would only have one more base runner the rest of the game as Keller and the Doniphan County defense shut down Frankfort. In the bottom of the first Doniphan got their offense rolling using five hits, a hit batter and a Frankfort error to score six runs with a three-run homer by Keller highlighting the frame. Doniphan County added two more runs in the third and another in the fourth.
 
Keller on the mound pitched five strong innings giving up just one-hit and two walks, while striking out seven to earn the win and offensively finished 2-3 with a three-run homer, four RBI's and run scored earning him McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on Kanzaland radio. Tucker Morris had the only other multi-hit game for Doniphan County going 2-3, while Nathan Gaarder was 1-1 with a double, walk, hit by pitch and two runs scored.
 
Frankfort's lone hit came in the fifth inning by Braden Deters, while Wyatt VanDorn and Christian Buessing each drew a walk. Cody Huerter took the loss on the mound going four innings giving up nine runs on 10-hits, two walks, two hit batters and one strikeout.
 
The loss moves Frankfort to 0-1 on the season, while Doniphan County improved to 3-1 on the year and moved into the NEKL tournament Semifinals.
 
Hiawatha Makes Early Lead Hold Up for Win Over Sabetha
 
Early offense led to a lead for Hiawatha which they never relinquished and they held off Sabetha for the 13-8 win in the close first round game of the NEKL tournament.
 
The action started with Hiawatha notching four hits and a Sabetha error allowing Hiawatha to plate three  in the top of the first to take the lead with Shawn Green's RBI double highlighting the inning. Sabetha answered with two-runs in the bottom of the first using a pair of two-out hits to capitalize on a Hiawatha error, making it 3-2 Hiawatha after one inning. The offense continued to manufacture runs for Hiawatha in the second inning as Sabetha hurt themselves with three errors and Hiawatha with only one-hit in the inning scored five runs. It was 9-2 going into the bottom of the third when Sabetha used a pair of walks and three hits to score four runs to draw within two, as Kaid Allen's RBI double highlighted the inning.
Hiawatha would add a few more runs and hold off all the Sabetha rallies to secure the 13-8 win.
 
Green was the McDonald's "Player of the Game" on Kanzland radio for Hiawatha as he earned the win on the mound giving up eight runs on eight hits, four walks and struck out three and was 3-5 offensively with two doubles, two RBI's and a run scored. Ryker Smith, Dakota Bayles and Taylor Jacobsen all had multi-hit games also for Hiawatha as Smith finished 2-4 with three runs scored and a hit by pitch, while Bayles was 2-5 with two runs scored and Jacobsen went 2-4 with four RBI's and a run scored.
 
Sabetha's Dustin Gruber took the loss on the mound, while Adam Herl, Dustin Boeckman and Allen each had a multi-hit game in the loss. Herl finished 2-4 with a run scored, Boeckman was 2-3 with a run scored and RBI and Allen was 2-4 with an RBI.
 
The win makes Hiawatha 1-2 on the year and puts them into the NEKL tournament Semifinals, while Sabetha falls to 2-8 on the season.
