Highland Women's Basketball Beats #10 NJCAA Division I Team

After opening up the season in routing fashion earlier in the week the Highland lady Scotties took the #2 NJCAA Division II rankings on the road to compete at the Allen Community College Tournament and took on the #10 NJCAA Division I ranked Northeastern Oklahoma A&M squad and earned a tough 61-56 win to move to 2-0.

Highland found themselves down by three at the half 30-27 but picked things up in the second half outscoring NEO 34-26 to earn the win despite having 25 turnovers in the contest and only shooting 30% from the floor. For the second straight game Mariane Carvalho led the team in scoring posting 19 points, while Jameka Dowell chipped in 13 points and Shaiann Tramble scored 12 points.

The season rolls along on Saturday with a matchup against Redlands Community College at noon in Iola at the Allen CC Tournament.

Highland Men Fall In Tough Contest With Barton to Open Season

Highland Scotties men's basketball team hit the road on Friday night to open their season and took on Barton Community College and suffered the 69-54 loss to start the year 0-1.

Scotties found themselves struggling to shoot the ball on the night going just 17-54 from the floor to shoot 31.5% on the night and only 22.7% from three and 53.6% from the charity stripe. The shooting woes led to only 19 first half points as Highland trailed 31-19 at intermission and while the Scotties kept pace with Barton in the second half the early hole was too much.

Jaquan Daniels led Highland with a double-double pouring in 24 points an registering 10 rebounds, while Danmons O'Conner scored nine points and Dontre English added eight points.

The season continues on Saturday against the Washburn JV with the game being played in Great Bend at 4:00pm.
