Highland Women & Men's Basketball Teams Snag Two Wins Each at HCC Scottie Classic

Highland basketball played host to the Scottie Classic Friday and Saturday and it was a 4-0 weekend for the Scottie basketball teams with two wins each for the women and men.

Highland women opened the HCC Scottie Classic on taking on William Penn Junior Varsity for the third time this year and cruised past them for their seventh win of the season, claiming the victory 109-52. Lady Scotties outscored William Penn by 10 points or more in all four quarters while shooting 61.8% from the field (42-68) and 53.8% from three-point range hitting 14 three’s. Six gals finished the game in double figures with 23 points from Blaize Burgess leading the way going 7-9 from three-point range. Mariane Carvalho added 19 points, while Ashlyn McDonald scored 15 points both Tiana Cook and Jameka Dowell tallied 10 points each. Szonja Vukov tallied 11 points and added nine rebounds and eight assists.

Ladies capped the weekend improving to 8-0 on the season with a 131-28 rout of Bacone College Junior Varsity on Saturday. Highland shot 56.4% from the field shooting the ball 96 times in the game and outrebounded Bacone 59-25 in the win. Seven gals scored in double figures including a trio with 20 or more points each led by Vukov who scored 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while dishing out six assists. McDonald tallied 24 points and added 10 rebounds for the double-double, while Carvalho scored 20 points. Burgess posted 13 points, while former Valley Heights Mustang, Sidney Blackburn and Niccolly Viscardi each scored 12 points and Jameka Dowell posted 10 points.

Highland men opened the HCC Scottie Classic with their fifth straight win edging Midland Junior Varsity by two-points 72-70. Down five at halftime 38-33 the Scotties traded lead with Midland in the second half and with just seconds left in the game it was tied at 70 and Ryan Haskins took things into his hands for Highland hitting a game winner with four seconds left to lift the Scotties to the win. Scotties hit 50% from the floor in the contest (27-54) and were led by Stephon Jackson who tallied 16 points hitting four three’s in the game. D’Juan Scudder and Haskins each chipped in 11 points.

Scottie men had an easier time in their second game of the Scottie Classic as they cruised past Pure Prep Academy 74-34. Highland shot 48.3% in the win while holding Pure Prep to 25.5% shooting  and the Scotties won the rebounding battle 45-23. Jackson again led Highland with 15 points, while former Troy Trojan, Collin Jasper chipped in 11 points including going 3-8 from the three-point range. Jaquan Daniels and Dontre English each added 10 points for the Scotties.

Highland ladies are back in action on Monday night on the road against University of St. Mary junior varsity at 7:00pm, while the Scottie men hit the court again at home on Tuesday as they will host Ottawa University junior varsity at 6:00pm.
