Sabetha Girls & Hiawatha Boys Win Jeff West Track & Field Titles

It was another cold spring day on Tuesday but nine area schools and one other meet up with each other as Jefferson West played host to track and field action.

On the girls side it was heavily in favor of Sabetha with the top team score on the day finishing with 230 points over 110 points better than second place finishers, Jefferson County North who tallied 117.5 points. The Holton Wildcats rounded out the top three teams finishes with 107.75 points. Rounding out the rest of the team performances on the girls side were: Jeff West (4th), Hiawatha (5th), ACCHS (6th), Rock Creek (7th), Valley Falls (8th), Oskaloosa (9th) and Jackson Heights (10th).

For the boys competition on the day the team performances were tight between the top three teams. The Hiawatha Redhawks won another team crown this time tallying 144 total points, only two better than second place finishers the Holton Wildcats who finished with 142 points; Sabetha finished third not to far behind with 137.5 total points. Rounding out the rest of the team performances on the boys side were: Jefferson County North (4th), Jeff West (5th), Valley Falls (6th), Jackson Heights (7th), Rock Creek (8th), ACCHS (9th) and Oskaloosa (10th).

Individually on the day there were plenty of highlight performances from many of the area schools with multiple first place finishers for many athletes from different schools.

In the girls competition the top performances on the day perhaps came by Hiawatha sophomore, Jordan Puvogel and JCN junior, Hannah Twenhafel. Puvogel swept the distance runs at the Jeff West Invite winning her usually competitions in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, but adding the 800 meter run title this time, also. The sophomore won all her gold medals by nice margins best the second place finisher by over five seconds in the 800, by 30-plus seconds in the 1600 and 19 seconds in the 3200. For Twenhafel she won four of the five outdoor pentathlon events to capture the overall crown by over 300 points. The Charger, won the 100 meter hurdles, shot put, 800 meter run and 200 meter dash in the outdoor pentathlon competition only losing the long jump to teammate, Lauryn Baker.

Hiawatha and JCN had other first place finishers on the day, on top of those great performances by Puvogel and Twenhafel. For the Redhawks, freshman, Emily Gartner continued to make a mark winning the discus throw with a toss of 111-01, five feet better than second place. For the Chargers, junior, Jamie Navinskey took home the 100 meter dash (12.71) and long jump (15-08.75) gold medals, while fellow junior, Heather Polson won the pole vault (5-00).

The first place team on the girls side the Sabetha Bluejays took home three first place finishes with two coming at the hands of sophomore, Heidi Heiniger who won both the 300 meter hurdles (54.77) and the javelin throw (125-04), winning the latter by nearly 18 feet. Bluejays lone other first place came in teh 4x100 meter relay with a time of 53.36.

Holton lady Wildcats took home four first place finishers all different athletes for the Wildcats as Brylee New, Connor Strader, Kyrstie Miller and Tyler Prine each won an event. New, Strader and Prine all won running events taking the 200 meter dash (26.80), 400 meter dash (1:02.49) and 100 meter hurdles (17.88), respectively. Miller, after finishing second in the last meet in the shot put cameback to capture first at the Jeff West Invite with a toss of 35-06, five inches better than second place.

Tiger squads from Jeff West and ACCHS both had multiple first place finishes on the day, too. For Jeff West it was junior, Kendal Holloman and senior, Molly Hothan winning the pole vault (8-00) and triple jump (30-08.50), respectively. While, Jeff West also claimed the 1600 Sprint Medley race behind a time of 4:50.03, over 18 seconds better than second place. ACCHS took home a pair of relay wins, capturing the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays with times of 4:36.17 and 10:43.63.

On the boys side six different individuals/teams won multiple events on the days competition with all six hailing from the top three teams in Hiawatha, Holton and Sabetha.

For the Redhawks, senior, Denzel Chilcoat and junior, Conner Bigham lead the way with two gold's each. Chilcoat continued to sweep the 100 and 200 meter dashes, just like in all the other competitions thus far this season, this time registering times of 10.74 and 22.46, respectively. For Bighman he won the 800 meter run behind a time of 2:09.42 and also won the high jump with a leap of 6-00.

Holton's multiple first place finishers came in the relays and in the hurdles. Wildcats took home the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 45.66 and won the 1600 Sprint Medley (4:07.25), while senior, Jaxon Wright won continued to dominate the hurdles this season winning the 110 and 300 meter hurdles with times of 14.80 and 41.96.

For the Bluejays of Sabetha senoir, Trenton Cox won both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, while the Bluejays relay team won the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays. Cox won a pair of tight races in the 1600 (4:54.92) and 3200 (10:50.99), while the relay squad took the 4x400 and 4x800 behind times of 3:46.41 and 8:53.13.

First places for the Redhawks and  Wildcats didn't stop at the multi-event winners in the action at the Jeff West Invite.

For the first place team Hiawatha, they also had an individual first place finish in the discus with a toss of 142-10, junior, Quentin Overdick took home the crown. Holton's other first place finishers on the boys side came at the hands of seniors, Cameron Karn who won the triple jump with a leap of 39-10.50 and Ryan Haefke who won the 400 meter dash with a time of 54.40.

Jeff West, Valley Falls, JCN and Jackson Heights all took home some first place finishes, also on the days action.

For the Tigers of Jeff West it was Eric Homewood vaulting his way to a win in the pole vault behind a vault of 9-00. Dragons took home a first place with junior, Max Badgett winning the long jump behind a leap of 18-10. While, JCN Charger, Luke Pyle and Jackson Heights Cobra, Caleb Niehues won throwing titles in the javelin and shot put with tosses of 160-04 and 48-02, respectively.

Rock Creek's, Josh Roberts took home the outdoor pentathlon title behind wins in two of the five events winning the long jump and 100 meter dash. The other three events were won by area competitors with ACCHS Tiger, Zak Hollands winning the shot put, Valley Falls Dragon, Hunter Hosler winning the 110 meter hurdles and JCN Charger, Dallas Edwards winning the 1500 meter run.

While it felt more like winter time with the cold weather, spring sports display of track and field was at its finest with many area teams having great performances at the Jeff West Invite.
