KSHSAA Votes to Allow Schools in 4A to Split Class
By Mike Smith

Changes could be coming in the classification system for athletics in Kansas as KSHSAA, Friday voted to pass a proposal to split 4A into two classifications, like the current setup with 1A with Divisions I and II.

KSHSAA voted 35-27 to pass the proposal thus allowing now the current 64 Class 4A schools to vote on the proposal that could split the classification in two. The move would be like the current system in 1A, as there would be two 4A champs each year in the sports of football, girls and boys basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball if two divisions are formed.

Class 4A , currently has 64 total schools in the classfication and has the largest enrollment differential between the top and bottom schools in all the classifications, with a 729 to 258 difference.

This new proposal of splitting the current 4A classification was pushed to KSHSAA by the Big Seven League. (League includes -- 4A schools: Holton, Jeff West, Royal Valley, Perry Lecompton, Santa Fe Trail; 3A schools: Nemaha Valley, Sabetha, Hiawatha)

The idea of making changes to the classification system in Kansas is not something new as there was a previous proposal put to vote that would have moved Class 4A to 48 schools with the bottom 16 moving down to 3A and bottom 16 of each class under 4A, moving down a classification, also. This proposal only passed by a majority in Class 4A which was not nearly enough to pass the proposal, as classes 3-1A did not pass it.

The new change is only up to Class 4A to vote on and now is in the hands of the 64 Kansas schools in the classification to decide if they want to move forward with the new proposal.
