With this being the final week of basketball before teams head to Christmas break, momentum is always crucial. On Monday, both Maranatha and Oskaloosa battled to get the first win of the season.

In girls competition, the Lady Eagles scored 21 points in the first half to give them a cushion at the break up 21-11. Oskaloosa was able to rebound very well all throughout the game, but the pressure from Maranatha was just too much as Oskaloosa fell to the Lady Eagles 41-21. Ten different players scored for Maranatha and no one reached double figures. The leading scorer was senior Bailey Kroening, finishing with eight points.

For Oskaloosa, sophomore Maddy Miller played an excellent game to be the Bank of Atchison Player of the Game. Miller was the only player to get to double digits as she scored 10 points for the Lady Bears.

Oskaloosa fell to 0-4 and plays its first NEKL matchup at McLouth on Friday while Maranatha improved to 1-2.

The boys matchup was quite the battle between the Bears and the Eagles. At the half, Maranatha had a six-point cushion, up 22-16. The Eagles couldn’t increase that lead after three quarters as Maranatha led 38-32 going into the fourth. Oskaloosa’s junior Justin Sharp recorded many steals that led to easy buckets in the final quarter, but it was his three-point bucket that tied the game at 40-40. Both teams traded baskets for a bit before the Eagles were able to fly away and get the victory, winning 52-45.

Senior Endurance Crosby recorded a huge double-double for Maranatha scoring 22 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Junior Jace Brudette chipped in 10 points. For Oskaloosa, junior Justin Sharp was the Bank of Atchison Player of the Game. He finished with 14 points, 10 coming in the fourth quarter.

Oskaloosa fell to 0-4 on the season while Maranatha went to 1-2. Oskaloosa’s matchup on Friday at McLouth can be heard on KAIR 1470 AM and online with our free live stream here on MSCsports.net.
