Marysville & Immaculata Singles Competitors Have Best Performances at 3-2-1A State Tennis for Area Competitors

Boy’s tennis season has come to a close for the 2014 season and it was area singles competitors from Marysville and Immaculata that highlighted the 3-2-1A State competition at Goddard for the top area performances.

Posting the best finish on the day was Marysville Bulldog, Tanner Wright who took home fourth place in the singles competition, after going 2-2 on the day with a bye. After opening with a bye for the first round Wright won his next two matches 6-4, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinals Wright suffered the 6-0, 6-0 loss and would play for third place, where he fell in that matchup 6-2, 6-0 to take fourth place at State.

In doubles competition for Marysville the tandem of Tommy McNish and Zach Pieschl had the best showing going 1-2. McNish and Pieschl won their first match 6-1, 6-2, but fell in the next match 6-2, 6-0, moving into the elimination bracket where they lost their next match 9-7 to bow out of the tournament. Tony Hooyer and Dustin Faulkner also competed for the Bulldogs losing a pair of tough competitions, as they fell 5-7, 7-6 (5), 10-7 in the first round and lost 9-6 in an elimination bracket match.

Marysville as a team finished ninth out of 22 schools represented at the 3-2-1A State competition.

Immaculata was led by a pair of top 10 individual finishes on the day as Phillip Hernandez and Sam Rhee finished seventh and ninth, respectively at State. Hernandez won his opening round match 6-0, 6-1, but fell in his next match losing 7-5, 6-3. Phillip bounced back with three straight wins 9-5, 9-2 and 9-1 moving him one win away for playing for fifth place, but he suffered a 9-6 and would play for seventh. In the seventh place match Hernandez earned the gritty win 9-8 (7-2). Rhee also opened the State competition with a win 6-1, 6-2, but lost his second match like Hernandez falling 6-0, 6-1. Sam finished the day winning his next two matches 9-4 and 9-3, then falling 9-3 but rallying to finish the day with two more wins 9-4 and 9-5 to finish ninth.

Raiders doubles team of Andy Eam and Adam Hibb also competed at State falling in their first two matches of competition 6-1, 6-0 and 9-2 to bow out of the tournament early.

Behind the strong singles performances, Immaucalta placed sixth as a team out of 22 schools represented at the 3-2-1A State competition.
