Marysville Wins & Doniphan West Takes 6th as Teams to Highlight Mission Valley Wrestling Tourney

The wrestling season kicked off in full force on Saturday and five area teams competed at the Mission Valley tournament in a field of 16 teams.

At the end of the day it was the Marysville Bulldogs the eighth ranked 3-2-1A team in the State dominating the mats finishing with 210 points to claim the Tournament title winning by 49 points. Doniphan West had the second best area team performance finishing sixth out of 16 teams, which is their best Mustang team performance in nine trips to the Mission Valley tournament. Jeff West, Perry Lecompton and Immaculata finished 11th, 14th and 15th, respectively as teams.

Marysville Bulldogs on the day were led by three individual champions on the day as Mitchell Schoenberger, Josh Nelsen and Caleb Vogelsberg all took first place at their respective weight classes of 132, 170 and 195lbs. Schoenberger put together a 3-0 day, picking up three pinfall wins on his way to first place, while Nelsen also went 3-0 and had three pinfall victories. For Vogelsberg he won his first two matches via pinfall and won the Championship bout by a 1-0 decision for a 3-0 day.

The great performances didn't stop with the three first place finishes for Marysville as five guys took home the silver on the day: Skylar Widmer (132lbs), Joe Smith (138lbs), Jacob Stryker (145lbs), Jacob Mintzmeyer (152lbs) and Nick Ackerman (182lbs) all finished second in their weight classes. Chance Hight and Scott Kleinert each earned third place finishes at the weight classes of 106 and 285lbs, while Mark Widmer and Skyler Ballman also placed for Marysville each finishing sixth place at 120 and 126lbs, respectively.

The Doniphan West Mustangs with their best team performance ever at the Mission Valley tournament were led by a pair of individual champs on the day as the State's number one grappler in 3-2-1A, Garret Dunlap opened the year going 4-0 at 160lbs and his teammate, Kody Collins went 3-0 at 182lbs to take first place. Dunlap won the opening round with a 6-1 decision, then followed that up with a 12-0 major decision win and won in the semifinals via a 5-1 decision and won the Championship via pinfall. Collins won via pinfall in his first two matches and then in the Championship won with a 5-0 decision.

Four more Mustangs placed on the day as Kortin Blevins and Zeb Speer each wrestled their way to third place finishes at 195 and 145lbs, respectively. While, Lawrence Miller finished fifth at 220lbs and David Shannon placed sixth.

The Jeff West Tigers had four grapplers place on the day as both Austin Michaelis and Nich Reeb each finished fourth at 113 and 152lbs, respectively and Chase Montgomery and Michael Majors each notched fifth place finishes at 160 and 285lbs, respectively.

For Immaculata and Perry Lecompton only one wrestler brought home a medal at the Mission Valley tournament. Max Campbell wrestled his way to third place at 170lbs for the Raiders and Jackson Dwyer took sixth at 285lbs for Perry Lecompton.

The wrestling season continues for all five area teams this week with action during the week or the next week in another tournament.
