It was a Twin Valley League twin-bill last night in Axtell as the Eagles hosted Centralia and the Panthers went home with a pair of road victories, as the Panther girl's won 39-19 and the boys claimed a 42-33 win.

The night started off with a low scoring affair between two teams that expect to be in the top half of the Twin Valley League and Centralia and Axtell traded leads in the first quarter with the Panthers holding the 9-7 advantage at the end of the frame. The lead grew to four at the half with Centralia up 17-13, but neither team had found consistent offensive production in the first half. In the second half the offensive woes continued for both teams, but more so for the Eagles as they only scored six second half points and the Panthers put together a 16-3 fourth quarter to pad their lead and notch the 39-19 win.

With the win Centralia improves to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in League, as senior, Liz Hasenkamp notched double figures for the third time this season posting 16 points, hitting four three-pointers earning her Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA radio. Fellow senior, Amaris Jones chipped in eight points and junior, Mayda Stallbaumer had seven for Centralia.

In the loss Axtell was led by junior, Kiersten Talbot who posted seven points and junior, Megan Buessing added six, but the Eagles took their first loss of the season moving to 3-1 on the year.

Just like the girl's matchup the boy’s competition was a low scoring affair, too but featured more scoring and a tight ballgame down the stretch. Both teams traded leads in the first quarter with Centralia leading 12-10 after the first period, but in the second quarter is when the Panthers opened up a double figure lead outscoring Axtell 11-2 in the period. The Eagles two points in the second quarter came from the free throw line as they were unable to net a field goal in the frame and were down 23-12 at the half to Centralia. In the third quarter the lead was dwindled down to five points, but Centralia was resilient and pushed the lead back to 10 going into the fourth quarter. Axtell didn't go away quietly as they had another run in them drawing within one-point multiple times in the fourth and had the game at 34-33 with less than two minutes to go, but Centralia closed out the game with a 8-0 run to secure the 42-33 win.

The win puts Centralia at 3-0 to start to the season as they grinded out the win down the stretch and senior, Joey Ferron paced the Panthers with 13 points earning Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Dustin Talley posted another double figure game for Centralia finishing with 11 points in the contest.

Axtell in the loss was led by senior, Andrew Feldkamp who finished with 11 points, six of which he scored in the fourth quarter, while junior, Adam Kuckelman chipped in eight points as Axtell fell to 1-3 on the season.

Both teams continue the season on Friday in League play as they both hit the road with Centralia traveling to Wetmore and Axtell traveling to Linn.
