Jayhawk Conference Basketball Media Day and Predictions
By Justin Fluke

The College Basketball season is only a couple weeks away and Monday, the Jayhawk Conference held their preseason media days in Wichita.  As with many two-year community college programs, the Highland CC Scottie hoop teams will have a new look and major overhaul to their roster for 2012-13.

The HCC Women are coming off a remarkable 28-4 season that included a third place finish (15-3) in the brutal Jayhawk Conference East Division.  However, Coach B.J. Smith returns just four players from last year's roster and must replace Jayhawk Conference Player of the Year, Kathryn Thomas.  The Lady Scotties lost half their scoring and rebounding and list a total of just 9 players on the current roster.  Among those are freshman from Puerto RIco and Brazel as well as local Holton products, sisters Rylie (Sophomore) and Ryann Bowser.  The HCC women were picked to finish 7th of 10 teams this year in the Conference ahead of Kansas City, Neosho County and Fort Scott, while Cowley was tabbed as the preseason favorite.

The HCC Men showcase an entire new team with a roster that features 12 freshman and 1 transfer.  The Scotties are coming off a 15-16 season that included a 8-10 mark in Conference play.  Coach Jerre Cole enters his third year as head coach at his alma-mater.  The Scotties are picked 8th of 10 teams in the Jayhawk East ahead of only Allen County and Fort Scott.  Coffeyville and Cowley were tabbed at the top of the coaches preseason poll.  Highland's roster features local freshman Jeremy Melvin from Onaga and Marc Ellis from Highland.

Both Highland CC Basketball teams tip off their season the first week in November.
