Most of the Northeast Kansas League legion baseball teams were in action for at least one game over the weekend either on Friday, Saturday or Sunday with several getting in multiple games.

Back on Friday, Sabetha welcomed Wymore (NE) to town and picked up their fifth win of the season by claiming the 10-2 victory. Seneca was also in action on Friday in non-league play, traveling to Silver Lake were they split a double header; falling in game one 9-8 and winning game two, 9-1. The only League action on Friday night was scheduled to be Doniphan County at Hiawatha but that twin bill was postponed.

On Saturday, Doniphan County was scheduled to hit the diamond again but saw their games cancelled as Silver Lake did not have enough players and thus forfeited two games of the scheduled double header.

Sunday saw six of the NEKL teams in action in three League double headers as Doniphan County hosted Sabetha, Hiawatha traveled to Frankfort and Seneca welcomed Oskaloosa to town. All three twin bills were sweeps as Doniphan County beat Sabetha 13-4 in four innings and 8-7 in come from behind fashion in game two. For Hiawatha they picked up a pair of road wins over Frankfort winning 5-3 and 9-0 in six innings, while Seneca swept Oskaloosa with 6-1 and 1-0 wins.

Big Seven-Run Fifth Leads Sabetha to Win over Wymore

In non-league action Sabetha welcomed Wymore (NE) to town on Friday for a matchup and put together a solid offensive night to earn the 10-2 win in five innings.

Sabetha scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth and that capped the win over Wymore in five innings. Behind that seven run inning, Sabetha propelled themselves to their fifth win of the season, taking advantage of three hits, four walks and an error in the fifth to score the final seven runs of the contest.  Alec Kirwan pitched the complete shortened game by scattering six hits over five innings and struck out four.  Blake Popkess and Kaid Allen each had two hits to lead the Sabetha’s offense.

The win pushed Sabetha to 5-15 on the season.

Seneca Splits With Silver Lake on the Road in Double Header

It was a tale of two different games as game one was close between Silver Lake and Seneca with Silver Lake just edging Seneca 9-8 for the win, while game two was all Seneca to earn the split with a 9-1 win on the road.

Both teams got the offense going early as Seneca plated two runs in the top of the first, only to see Silver Lake take the lead with a three-run bottom of the first. It was an uphill climb from that point as Seneca managed to tie the game in the fourth at 5-5, but Silver Lake scored three more in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead at 8-5 and added another in the fifth. Down to the final three outs Seneca led off the top of the seventh with a solo homer by Cody Rottinghaus and got two more hits and three walks in the inning but only managed to get two more runs, leaving the bases loaded and falling 9-8 in game one to Silver Lake. Alex Rottinghaus, Dustin Rottinghaus and Tristan Allen all had a two-hit game in the loss, while Dalton Hiltbrand took the loss on the mound going four innings.

Game two was all Seneca as they cruised to a 9-1 win behind the arm and bat of Cody Rottinghaus who pitched all five innings giving up one run on two hits, eight walks and a pair of hit batters, while striking out 11 and going 3-3 at the plate with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs.

With the split on Friday against Silver Lake, Seneca improved to 11-4 on the season.

Doniphan County Sweeps Sabetha at Home in League Action

After not being able to play on Friday and Saturday due to weather and forfeits, Doniphan County hit the diamond on Sunday against Sabetha in a League double header and claimed a 13-4 four inning win, along with a 8-7 come from behind win for the sweep.

Game one was controlled by Doniphan County early on scoring four runs in the first and not looking back to go on and earn the 13-4 win, as Nathan Gaarder led the way pitching all four frames giving up four runs on five hits and 10 strikeouts. Reid Greaser continued to lead the Doniphan County offense notching a three hit game, while Phoenix Keller and Jeffrey Watts each had a pair of hits. Brandon Poe led Sabetha in the loss with a 2-2 game with a run scored.

In game two, Doniphan County took the early lead 1-0 through two but Sabetha busted out in the top of the third with seven runs, using seven walks, one hit and a Doniphan County error giving them the lead. Doniphan County didn't go away quietly as they chipped away throughout the contest and got a run in the third and fifth, two in the sixth and three more in the seventh to earn the 8-7 win. Tucker Morris delivered game winning hit with two RBI's to secure the win, while going 2-3 as Greaser posted another multi-hit game with two hits and two RBI. Cooper Leach earned the win in four and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief, while Dustin Gruber pitched well for Sabetha but took the no decision.

The wins push Doniphan County to 14-3 on the season and 5-3 in League play, while Sabetha is at 5-17 and 2-8 in the League.

Hiawatha Sweeps Frankfort on the Road for Pair of League Wins

Hiawatha went out on the road and was the only League team that won on the road on Sunday as they traveled to Frankfort and earned the sweep behind 5-3 and 9-0 wins.

The offense started early for Hiawatha as they plated three runs in the first on three hits and a hit batter, including an RBI double by Taylor Jacobsen. Frankfort broke through in the third against Jacobsen who was pitching for Hiawatha, as they tied the game at three with two hit batters, two walks and one hit. Despite only getting one more hit the rest of the game Hiawatha used that hit and four walks in the fifth to score twice and regain the lead to win 5-3. Jacobsen went six innings for the win giving up three runs on three hits, four walks with three strikeouts while going 1-2 with a double, two RBIs, two walks and a run scored. Parker Hasenkamp pitched the final frame for Hiawatha for the save and went 1-2 with two runs scored and two hit by pitches. For Frankfort they only had three hits, while Cody Huerter took the loss on the mound pitching five innings of relief.

Game two was all Hiawatha as they out-hit Frankfort 8-2 and won the contest 9-0 in six innings behind a strong pitching performance from Shawn Green. Green went six shutout innings giving up two hits, two walks and striking out two for the win. While the offense of Hiawatha scored three runs in the first, second and sixth innings with Cameron Smith, Jacobsen and Brendan Steeled all going 2-4. Seneca Sweeps Oskaloosa in Battle of Top League Teams

Seneca used solid pitching performances to stifle the Oskaloosa offense on Sunday earning the double header sweep with 6-1 and 1-0 wins.

Game one Oskaloosa started the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning using two hit batter, two walks and one hit, but only managed one run leaving the bases loaded. Seneca would do the rest of the scoring on the night as they plated three runs in second and fourth innings and out-hit Oskaloosa 10-2 in the 6-1 win. Kurtis Niehues, Andrew Oller and Dalton Hiltbrand led the Seneca offense with two hits each, while Devin Henry earned the win going seven innings giving up one run on two hits, three walks and struck out four. Tyler Moison took the loss for Oskaloosa giving up all six runs in three innings pitched.

It was a pitching duel in game two as Bryce Stottlemire and Alex Rottinghaus squared off on the mound for Oskaloosa and Seneca, respectively. It wasn't until the bottom of the seventh that a run came across the plate as Seneca won in walk-off fashion on a Justice McKernan sacrifice fly, giving Seneca the 1-0 victory. Rottinghaus finished the game going all seven innings giving up zero runs on three hits and three walks, while striking out 11. His counterpart Stottlemire gave up just one run on five hits, five walks and struck out seven for Oskaloosa in the loss. Rottinghaus added a 2-3 game to his night in the contest, while Jaxson Sullivan led Oskaloosa's offense going 2-2.
