It was a full slate of legion baseball action on Wednesday night starting the month of July off with a pair of League double headers and non-league action for two other Northeast Kansas League teams.

In League play it was the home teams coming out on top as Sabetha and Seneca each earned double header sweeps over Hiawatha and Frankfort, respectively. Sabetha secured two wins in a pair of one-run wins; winning 1-0 and 6-5 over Hiawatha at Somerset Park. For Seneca it was two short games as they run ruled Frankfort in four innings for 12-2 and 11-1 victories.

Oskaloosa and Doniphan County were also in action on Wednesday as they took on Silver Lake and Falls City (NE), respectively. For Oskaloosa their rough stretch continued as they suffered 10-0 and 11-1 losses to Silver Lake and now are 10-11 on the season and have lost their last six. While, Doniphan County capitalized on their opportunities against Falls City and earned the 5-2 road win.

Sabetha Earns Pair of League Wins Over Hiawatha in One-Run Contests

It was a pair of close contests on Wednesday night at Somerset Park as Sabetha took down Hiawatha 1-0 and 6-5 for a pair of wins.

Sabetha in game one got what was the lone run of the game in the bottom of the first as Brandon Poe hit a one-out double and came around to score later in the inning on an RBI single by Alec Kirwan. That proved to be all Jake Meyer and Sabetha would need as Meyer threw a complete game shutout giving up just three hits and walking zero with four strikeouts on just 76 total pitches to earn the win and McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on KNZA, while Kirwan led the Sabetha offense going 3-3 with the lone RBI of the game.

Hiawatha was limited to four base runners in the contest with their three hits and batter reaching via an error. Shawn Green took the loss going five innings giving up one run on seven hits, three walks and one strikeout.

In game two Sabetha took the early lead scoring two in the first off a Brandon Brownlee double and added two more in the second to lead 4-0, until Hiawatha plated five runs in the third. Lead by a two RBI double by Green, Hiawatha scored five in the third to take a 5-4 advantage, but Sabetha answered in the bottom of the third scoring a pair of runs without a hit using walks and a wild pitch and passed ball giving them the 6-5 lead and ultimately the win.

Preston Brunning pitched four innings to earn the win, while Blake Popkess picked up the save and struck out the final two batters of the game for Sabetha.

The wins push Sabetha to 7-18 on the season and 4-8 in the League, while Hiawatha is now 5-12 overall and 4-8 in League action.

Seneca Pounds Frankfort for a Pair of Four Inning Wins

In a makeup double header of earlier this season it was all Seneca as they routed Frankfort in a pair of four inning wins, 12-2 and 11-1.

Frankfort got the scoring going early in game one as they plated a run in the first and third, but the offense opened up for Seneca after that as they scored four in the third and ended the game with an eight run fourth, using seven hits, two walks and two Frankfort errors for the eight runs and the 12-2 win. Kurtis Niehues, Dustin Rottinghaus and Dalton Hiltbrand led the offense for Seneca each with two hits as Niehues was 2-3 with a double, three RBI and a run scored, while Rottinghaus finished 2-2 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored and Hiltbrand tallied a 2-4 performance with two RBI and two runs scored.

Only four hits were registered by Frankfort was Cody Huerter, Dustin Talley, Brendan Melvin and Payton Heinen each had a hit.

Just like game one Frankfort scored first in game two as they plated a run in the top of the first, but Seneca posted their second eight run inning of the night in the second and went on for the 11-1 four inning win. Devin Henry led Seneca pitching three innings for the win and went 2-3 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI. Frankfort again mustered only four hits in the contest.

The wins push Seneca to 16-4 on the season and 11-3 in League action, while Frankfort is 3-9 overall and 2-8 in the League.

Doniphan County Takes Advantage of Walks to Earn Win Over Falls City

Behind the pitching performance of Jeffrey Watts and taking advantage of 10 walks Doniphan County earned the road win over Falls City (NE), 5-2 on Wednesday night.

Watts went the distance in the contest giving up just two runs on seven hits, two walks and recorded 11 strikeouts, while also going 2-3 at the plate with a run scored and RBI. While the offense overall only had six hits they were partnered with the 10 walks drawn and Doniphan County took advantage enough to earn the win.

The win pushes Doniphan County to a 15-3 record overall this season.
