Doniphan County & Atchison To Represent Area in Junior Legion State Tournament

A pair of area teams are set to hit the ball diamond tomorrow in Salina as they both qualified for the Class A junior legion State tournament last week.

Both Doniphan County and Atchison qualified for State out of the Northeast Class A Zone last week hosted in Wathena by Doniphan County as Doniphan County won the Zone and Atchison finished as the runner up. Atchison beat Doniphan County 8-1 in the winners bracket, sending Doniphan County to the loser's bracket side were they stay alive by beating Marysville and then beat Atchison twice 7-4 and 1-0 in nine innings to win the Zone tournament title. The top two teams qualified for the State tournament in Salina. The Doniphan County juniors return to State after finishing third last year at the Class A State tournament.

State gets underway on Tuesday in Salina at Dean Evans Stadium and the action will start off with Doniphan County who's 19-3 on the year taking on McPherson in the opening round at 1:00pm, while Paola will play Chanute at 3:30pm. Atchison will get start off the nightcap as they take on Andover at 6:00pm and Salina vs. Arkansas City will follow that game to wrap up the opening round action.

The tournament is a double elimination set up just like previous years.
