For the second straight year the Doniphan County junior legion team made a trip to the Class A State tournament and after finishing third last year they one upped themselves and finished second this year at State in Salina.

The State tournament started off with a matchup against the defending junior legion State Champs in McPherson and it was a tie ball game at 2-2 going into the seventh when McPherson busted out seven runs to take the 9-2 win and send Doniphan County to the loser bracket of the State tournament after day one.

Doniphan County bounced back after the first round loss to stave off elimination on day two as they cruised past Chanute 11-3 in five innings for the win. Up next was a familiar foe in Atchison and it was another run-rule affair for Doniphan County as they jumped up early 5-0 and sailed to the 12-2 four inning win and geared up for another later Thursday night. Looking to remain alive unsure themselves another third place finish or better Doniphan County took on Paola and picked up the 8-0 win, setting up a rematch between them and McPherson for the right to play Arkansas City in the championship, but either team would have to beat Arkansas City twice. First Doniphan County had to make it past McPherson and that they did on Friday, avenging their first round loss with an 8-0 win. That set up a championship match against Arkansas City with Doniphan County needing a pair of wins to win the State title, but Doniphan County would fall 9-1 and finish runner-up in the Class A State legion tournament.

The second place finish one ups the teams third place finish last year and they finish 23-5 overall on the season, while the Senior legion team gears up for action in the AA State tournament in Colby starting Wednesday. (All the games will be broadcasted on 103.9 KNZA)
