Looking to start the AA State tournament off with a bang the Doniphan legion squad took on Larned, who eliminated them at State last year and this year Doniphan County handed Larned a 6-0 loss in the opening round of the State tournament.

The first big opportunity came in the bottom of the second for Doniphan County as they strung three hits back-to-back-to-back to plate a pair of runs and take a 2-0 lead with Caleb Winkel delivering the two RBI double as the big hit. That proved to be all Doniphan County and starting pitcher Nathan Gaarder would need to claim the win but they added two more in the fifth and sixth; scoring two in the fifth on three hits, a wild pitch and error, while adding two in the sixth on two hits, a walk and two errors.

Larned had their best opportunity in the third as they stranded a pair of runners and had a runner in six of the seven innings but the pitching and defense of Doniphan County held them scoreless. Gaarder finished with the shutout for his tenth win on the season, improving to 10-0 while giving up just four hits, three walks, a hit batter and striking out five. Offensively leading the 10-hit attack for Doniphan County was a two-hit game for Chris Winkel (2-4 with two RBI & run scored), Alex Schmille (2-3 with two runs scored & double) and Phoenix Keller (2-3). While, Caleb Winkel's two RBI double early to give Doniphan County the initial lead earned him McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on 103.9 KNZA.

With the win Doniphan County moves on in the winner's bracket of the AA State legion tournament and will play the Hays Monarchs at 3:00pm Thursday (listen on 103.9 KNZA & mscsports.net); game moved up from original starting time. Hays beat Marysville 6-1 in their opening round game, scoring all six of their runs in the first inning of the win. Marysville will play Larned to start Thursday in an elimination game at 10:00am. Beloit cruised past Wellington 12-1 in four innings in the bottom of the winner's bracket and will play Colby after the host beat Iola 1-0 in the final first round game, setting up Iola versus Wellington in an elimination game on Thursday.
