The high school volleyball gets underway this weekend for a few area teams and all across the State next week and with that the Kansas Volleyball Association has announced their preseason rankings, which feature 10 Kanzaland area teams in the polls to start the year.

Three of the 10 start the season preseason number one, while two more make five teams starting the season preseason ranked number one or two in the classes of 4A-Division II to 1A-Division II.

In Class 4A-DII the Big Seven shows up big in the preseason polls as both Royal Valley and Holton are starting the season preseason ranked number one and two, respectively. The lady Panthers finished last year 26-16 and made the State tournament for the first time in school history, taking third place and with a good portion of that team returning they start the year preseason number one. The Holton Wildcats also look primed for another solid season after finishing 21-13 last year they start the year preseason ranked second. Atchison lady Red join Royal Valley and Holton in the preseason 4A-DII rankings as they are ranked sixth in the initial poll of the season, after a 29-10 season last year in which they lost to Royal Valley in the Sub-State championship.

Nemaha Central in their first season as the Thunder continued the strong tradition of both Nemaha Valley and B&B on the volleyball court and made the 3A State tournament finishing 32-14 last season. This year the Thunder come into the season as the only area team in Class 3A to start the season preseason ranked checking in at ninth.

The Washington County Tigers of the Twin Valley League returned to the top of Class 2A last year winning the State title for the second time in the last three years and finishing 39-4. This year the defending 2A champs will be starting the volleyball season atop the rankings in Class 2A coming in preseason number one.

Along with Washington County four more TVL volleyball squads start the season preseason ranked. Two of them are in Class 1A-DI, including the defending State champions in the Centralia lady Panthers. Centralia after finishing 44-1 last year and winning the school's 12th volleyball State title come into the season preseason ranked number two in Class 1A-DI only behind Goessel to start the season. The Valley Heights lady Mustangs also start the season in the preseason rankings coming in at tenth after posting a 26-13 record last year and making it all the way to the Sub-State championship match. A Northeast Kansas League team in Immaculata joins Centralia and Valley Heights in the preseason 1A-DI rankings as the lady Raiders start the year ranked eighth after a 29-9 season last year.

The TVL is also represented in the Class 1A-DII rankings to start the volleyball season as both Axtell and Linn start the season ranked. The lady Eagles of Axtell finished last year with a 28-16 record and a third place finish at State, making State for the first time since 2005 and this year they start the season preseason ranked number one in 1A-DII, returning virtually their entire team from last year. Linn who finished last year 26-12 and fell in their Sub-State championship game, starts this season preseason ranked tenth in 1A-DII.

The 2015 volleyball season sets up for many Kanzaland area teams to potentially be very successful and season should packed full of great competition.
