Area Schools Compete at Royal Valley Powerlifting Meet

Feats of strength were on display on Saturday at Royal Valley high school as the Panthers hosted a powerlifting competition with schools from all around in competition including several Northeast Kansas schools. 

Topping the boy’s competition as a team was Basehor-Linwood but two area teams finished in the Top five of the 18 competing as Horton and Riverside placed fourth and fifth as teams. McLouth and the host Royal Valley finished 11th and 12th as teams, while Easton (Pleasant Ridge) finished 16th. The girl’s competition had 14 teams competing and also saw Basehor-Linwood claim the top spot, while Royal Valley took fourth and Horton fifth also ACCHS took eighth place as a team in the girls competition. 

In the girls competition the top area performances came from Royal Valley and Horton as Macy Putnam of Royal Valley won the 148lbs weight class and Daspin Bruning of Horton won the 180lbs weight class. Putnam took first in all three competitions - bench, squat and clean at 148lbs to take first overall out of eight competitors. Putnam benched 125lbs, squatted 245lbs and cleaned 190lbs, winning both the bench and squat competition by 15lbs and the clean by 45lbs. Bruning just like Putnam won all three competitions at her weight class to finish first overall out of 14 competitors at 180lbs. A bench of 140lbs, a squat of 265 and clean of 185lbs won the three competitions for Bruning at 180lbs, as she won the bench by 25lbs, the squat by 45lbs and clean by 30lbs. 

Horton had another Top three finisher on the day as Callie Hoobler took second at 132lbs competing against 10 other lifters. Hoobler was led by her performance in the squat as she posted a lift of 220lbs to win the squat at 132lbs weight class. Her lift of 130lbs was the third best in the clean competition and she had the fourth best bench at 100lbs to help her finish second overall at 132lbs. 

Royal Valley also had another Top three finish as Chaley Lemmon took third at 114lbs out of five competitors. Lemmon had the third best bench, squat and clean at 114lbs posting lifts of 95lbs, 180lbs and 130lbs, respectively. 

ACCHS lady Tigers were led by the performance of Karina Johnson who finished third at 165lbs out of 11 competitors. Johnson took third in both the bench and clean after registering lifts of 125lbs in the bench and 130lbs in the clean, while posting the fourth best squat at 165lbs with a squat of 220lbs. The McLouth Bulldogs also had a third place finisher on the day, matter of fact two third place finishers. Dominique Tullis finished third overall at 140lbs out of 17 competitors and Jessica Rogers placed third overall at 123lbs out of 19 competitors. Tullis won the clean competition at 140lbs posting a clean of 160lbs to win by 10lbs, while taking third in the squat with a lift of 225lbs and took tenth in the bench with a press of 95lbs. Rogers had the second best bench at 125lbs, while posting the third best squat at 225lbs and finished with the sixth best clean at 125lbs. 

For the boys competition on the day a pair of overall first place finsihes at 123lbs and 242lbs led the performances from area lifters. Horton's, Murphy Tinio and Riverside's, Gaige Olivero earned first place finishes at 123lbs and 242lbs, respectively. Tinio took first out of five competitors at 123lbs winning the squat and clean portions of the competition with lifts of 245lbs and 210lbs, respectively, while posting the fourth best bench at 145lbs. Olivero proved to be the most consistent at 242lbs earning first out of nine competitors after registering the second best bench and squat with lifts of 295lbs and 425lbs, while recording the third best clean at 255lbs. 

Horton also had Derek Richardson finish in the Top three of his weight class as he took home second place at 181lbs out of 15 competitors. Richardson had the second best bench, squat and clean on the day at 181lbs posting lifts of 265lbs, 400lbs and 300lbs, respectively. 

Riverside on top of Olivero's first place showing had Leroy Watson take third place at 173lbs out of 16 competitors. Watson took second in the bench, despite tying for the best mark at 245lbs and registered the fourth best squat at 340lbs and 11th in the clean at 215lbs. 

The host Royal Valley and McLouth also each had a boy’s competitor finish with a Top three overall finish on the day. Garrett Rodewald of Royal Valley took second place at 173lbs and Rick Morris of McLouth earned a third place finish at 220lbs. Rodewald took second in the squat and clean with lifts of 345lbs and 295lbs at 173lbs, while posting the third best bench with a lift of 225lbs to earn second at 173lbs out of 16 competitors. Morris placed third at 220lbs out of 15 competitors, after posting the best mark in the bench at 265lbs, the second best clean at 270lbs and the sixth best squat at 300lbs. 

Several other area athletes competed well and some even one individual competition’s in their weight classes at the Royal Valley powerlifting meet on Saturday.
