Jeff West & Onaga Compete at Council Grove Wrestling Invitational

On Saturday a pair of area teams hit the mats with seven others at the Council Grove wrestling Invitational while the Jeff West Tigers and Onaga Buffaloes finished sixth and ninth as teams out of nine teams, several top notch individual performances were earned from both teams. 

Eleven grapplers compete for the Jeff West Tigers and all 11 finished sixth or better in their weight class at the Council Grove Invitational on Saturday. Nich Reeb led the Tigers as he claimed the tournament title at 160lbs going 4-0 on the day, with a pinfall win in 1:04 and three wins via decision 4-1, 6-4 and 3-2 in the Championship bout. A 3-1 day at 132lbs from Brandon Callahan led him to a second place finish for the Tigers, while Chase Montgomery went 3-2 at 170lbs and earned a third place finish. Kody Gibson (126lbs), Austin Michaelis (113lbs) and Shane Kelly (106lbs) each finished fourth place in their weight classes as both Gibson and Michaelis won a pair matches on the day and Kelly picked up one win. Three more Tigers grabbed fifth place finishes as Mason Heiden (152lbs), Tyler Casto (145lbs) and Caden Hansen (138lbs) all took fifth; both Heiden and Hansen won one match on the day, while Casto won three matches. Ryley Seals (220lbs) and Luke Holloman (120lbs) each finished sixth in their weight classes for Jeff West. 

A 4-1 record with four pinfall wins led Onaga on the day at the Council Grove Invitational as Eli Zidek took second in the heavyweight division of 285lbs, posting pinfall wins in 55 and 11 seconds and also 1:55 and 3:18. Brandon Merriman won two matches on the day at 138lbs finishing fourth, while Kylar Schmitt at 160lbs took sixth place and Brennan-Cole Lara finished eighth at 126lbs. 

The wrestling season continues for Jeff West and Onaga on Thursday January, 28th as the Tigers will be at Sabetha for a double dual and the Buffaloes will be at Wabaunsee for a double dual.
