League play continued in the high school volleyball season on Tuesday as Frankfort hosted Axtell and Onaga for a Twin Valley League triangular. At the end of the night after some competitive contests it was Axtell with a 2-0 night, while Frankfort went 1-1 and Onaga finished the evening 0-2.

The night started with Frankfort and Onaga squaring off on the court and the Wildcats won the contest in straight sets 25-22, 25-23 but had to battle from behind in each set to snag the win. Set one started off strong for Onaga as Kendal Krohn had an ace as the first point on the night and then the Buffaloes rattled off the next five points to take a 6-0 lead before Frankfort finally broke through. The Wildcats battled back to within one-point multiple times in the set but Onaga had answers until late in the set when Frankfort tied the action at 20-20 and then snatched the lead 22-21, ultimately finishing out the set to trail most of the first set but take it late 25-22. Set two saw Frankfort take the initial lead with a Caroline Ahlvers ace but the Buffaloes responded with a big run of eight straight points and took a 8-1 lead. Frankfort again drew within one just like the first set and holding a 13-12 lead Onaga called a timeout only to see the Wildcats tie the set and take the lead at 16-13 using a 5-0 run to gain the lead. The runs continued as Onaga then strung four-straight on the scoreboard and regained the 17-16 lead. The set was back and forth down the stretch with Frankfort making the final push and an Emilee Ebert spike finished the set and match for Frankfort 25-23.

In the second matchup of the night Onaga took on Axtell and the Eagles picked up the straight set win 25-15, 25-20. The Eagles took control early and established a 14-8 lead in the first set behind strong all around play and the Buffaloes needed to regroup calling a timeout. Out of the time the Eagles continue to control the first set extending the lead to as much as 11-points as Maddy Kuckelman connected upon a pair of aces to push the lead to 21-10 when Onaga called another timeout. The Eagles finished off the first set with a kill from Anna Buessing to win the set 25-15. Set two started strong for Axtell as Buessing delivered a pair of aces and then behind plays from Emily Ronnebaum and few others the Eagles built an 11-4 lead. Midway through the set Anna Porting record a trio of ace to help Axtell led 19-10 and the Eagles lead continued to balloon up again getting to set and match point at 24-14, but Onaga battled to stay in it with six straight points only to see Axtell finish the set and match off and earn the win 25-20 in set two to take the match. Onaga had contributions from all the gals on the varsity team on the night with Shay Duer and Alexis VanDonge being ultra-active for the Buffaloes.

Looking to finish the night 2-0, Frankfort and Axtell squared off in the final matchup of the night. The Eagles just like their first matchup of the night jumped on the early lead and control of the action working to a 12-4 lead in the first set behind a Trisha Mathewson ace and a Frankfort timeout ensued. But the Wildcats were unable to recover from the early deficit as the Eagles got plays from Ronnebaum, Montana Heinen and Porting to help them secure set one 25-14. Set two it was the plays of Mathewson and Patrica Heiman early that pushed the Eagles to a 7-3 early lead but down the stretch the young Frankfort team had Kennen Brandt register an ace during a 3-0 run by the Wildcats to make it 24-18 but Kuckelman delivered the final blow giving Axtell the set 25-18 and win. Ebert again was active for Frankfort set up by her teammates including Rebecca Adams, while Grace Dressman made several plays for the Wildcats on the night.

Axtell with the 2-0 night improved to 7-2 on the year and 4-0 in the TVL, while Frankfort going 1-1 on the evening moved to 2-2 on the season and in League play. Onaga finished the night 0-2 falling to 2-3 on the year with the same record in League action. Both Frankfort and Onaga will be in action again on Saturday, September 10th at the Frankfort Invite, while Axtell will host a League Quad next Tuesday for their next action.
