2017 Northeast Kansas All-Star Girls Basketball Teams

Over 60 top area senior athletes from Northeast Kansas took part in the annual Northeast Kansas All-Star games host by Highland Community College for the 31st time. The day was full of highly competitive action with the Navy team dominating the win column winning all three events.

Volleyball

The day got rolling with the volleyball contest and by the end of the action the Navy won three of the four sets played, 23-25, 25-13, 25-21, 25-23. Set one was tight early with Gold leading or tied with Navy until Navy led 7-6 but a 3-0 run by Gold got things back in their favor and then they worked to a 14-9 lead and up to 18-11 on the scoreboard when Navy called a timeout. Navy got things rolling soon after the timeout and put a 7-0 run together ultimately managing to tie set one at 22-22 but Gold finished the set off and won 25-23. Set two was tight until midway through the set when Navy put together another run to take it 25-13. Tied at a set apiece the All-Star game went to a deciding third set and Gold was rolling early starting the set on an 11-0 run but Navy would be the comeback kids again and this time eclipse Gold in the process. Battling back to tie it at 14-14 the match was tight for the next few points but Navy went on a big run to put themselves up 24-16 late and while Gold fended off match point several times Navy ultimately took the set 25-21 to win the match. The two teams played one final set as time granted them another opportunity to play and it was a back and forth set but Navy snagged the win in it too 25-23. 

The Navy team led by Hiawatha Red Hawk Head Coach, Brenda Siebenmorgan was led on the court by Holton Wildcat, Sydney Prine who recorded eight kills and three digs to earn "Player of the Match" for the All-Star volleyball matchup. Jackson Heights Cobra, Hannah Williams added eight kills and four blocks, while Hiawatha Red Hawk, Lexi Schwalm had seven kills, three digs and two blocks. The Gold team in the loss was coached by Axtell Eagle Head Coach, Pam Buessing and led by Nemaha Central Thunder, Kaley Dalinghaus who registered eight kills. Lauren Huber of Sabetha tallied seven kills, three blocks and five digs, while Abby Ross of Horton had seven assists and Mykah Wingerter of Tonganoxie had five blocks and pair of kills. (Other Gold Team Members: Mia Scott (Doniphan West), Maddy Kuckelman (Axtell), Patrica Heiman (Axtell), Grace Kuenzi (Sabetha), Anna Buessing (Axtell) and Hana Ronnebaum (Maur Hill-Mount Academy)).

It was tight early and only a six-point game at the end of one quarter but in the end the game proved to be one-sided with the Navy team taking the 105-67 victory. 

Gold team got off to a solid start but by the end of the first quarter the Navy team had found their groove and led 28-22. The second quarter the lead grew for Navy as they outscored the Gold team 29-19 to lead 57-41. The second half the Gold team continued to struggle to get shots to roll in and managed only 11 points in the third quarter while the Navy team continued to spread the ball and tallied 25 in the third to pad their lead. Ultimately Navy went on finish the game and earned the 105-67. 

Navy led by Hanover Wildcat Head Coach, Chris Biekmann had a quartet of players finish with double figures. Rossville Bulldog, Amanda Hill with a game-high 22 points was named "Player of the Game" while Centralia Panther, Cassidy Haufler added a double-double of 18 points and 16 rebounds. Hiawatha Red Hawk, Courtney Brockhoff and Horton Charger, Madison Blackburn added double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. In the loss the Gold team was coached by Nemaha Central Thunder Head Coach, Hadden Hiltgen and was led Thunder senior, Kaley Dalinghaus who scored 19 points, while Hana Ronnebaum of Maur Hill-Mount Academy tallied 10 points. Boys Basketball (Full box score)

It proved to one of the tightest games in the history of the Northeast Kansas All-Star games as boys basketball game went down to the wire and was tight throughout with the Navy team snatching the 83-82 win. 

Tight throughout the first half with both teams having leads but the Gold squad put a little run together late in the first half and led by eight but a bucket by the Navy team made it a six-point contest heading into intermission as Gold led 45-39. The lead again changed hands multiple times throughout the second half as the teams played a balanced game both shooting 38 and 39% from the floor for the Gold and Navy respectively and with a late bucket in the final minute Jeff West Tiger, Isaiah Schmidt gave Navy a 83-82 lead but with 14.7 seconds left the Gold team had one last opportunity after a layup opportunity went array and had one last chance with a three-pointer but Navy kept them off the scoreboard and earned the win 83-82. 

Navy who was led by Marysville Bulldog Head Coach, Scott Brown was led on the court by Troy Trojan Cuttar Huss who tallied a game high 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds and earned "Player of the Game" honors. Dillon Blain of Wamego and Schmidt of Jeff West each added double figures for Navy scoring 16 and 14 points and Schmidt nabbed nine rebounds, too. Gold team in the loss was led by Hanover Wildcat Head Coach, Kim Lohse and a trio of double figure scorers led the team. Both Will Bruna of Hanover and Joseph Kunkel of Hiawatha each scored 12 points, while Sean Nordberg of Wamego chipped in 11 points. Top senior area athletes got to showcase their talents one final time and compete against some of the area’s best in the 31st annual Northeast Kansas All-Star basketball games and 15th annual volleyball competition.
