Sabetha Leads Area Performances at Nemaha Central Boys Golf Invite

Thursday was one of the biggest area boys golf competitions of the season thus far with 18 schools in action in Seneca at Spring Creek golf course as Nemaha Central played host. 

Fourteen of the 18 schools hailed from Northeast Kansas area but it was a non-area school that claimed the best team score on the day as Wamego posted a 297 team score to take first place at the Nemaha Central Invite. Sabetha Bluejays had the best area performance finishing second place as a team with a 310 score, while Cornerstone took third (326). Vermillion and Nemaha Central rounded out the Top five team finishes placing fourth and fifth with team scores of 342 and 346. Clay Center, Holton, Maur Hill-Mount Academy, Linn and St. Mary's finished out the Top 10 team finishes placing sixth through tenth with scores of 350, 359, 374, 401 and 419. The rest of the team finishes had Immaculata 11th (424), Valley Heights 12th (435), Onaga 13th (435) and Atchison 14th (436). Hanover, Horton, Perry Lecompton and Washington County all had golfers in action on the day but did not field a full team. 

The best individual round from the area teams on the day belonged to Jesse Burger of Sabetha who placed third with a 70, four strokes out of first place. Garrett Scott joined Burger in the Top 10 placing eighth with a round of 78, while the Bluejays Top four scorers on the day all finished in the Top 20. David Pierson shot a 79 for 11th place and an 83 by Brendan Rokey finishing out the four-man team score as he placed 16th. Reese Lierz also tabbed a Top 20 finish for Sabetha placing 19th out 86 golfers after carding a round of 85. 

Five other area schools had Top 20 individual performances on the day but only one of the five had multiple Top 20 finishes like Sabetha. Vermillion had a pair of golfers finish 14th and 15th on the day both finishing with rounds of 82 as Austin Hardwick and Jason Gore notched the finishes, respectively. 

Holton Wildcat, AJ Haussler after shooting a 75 on the links earned fifth place, while Nemaha Central Thunder, Dylan Enneking shot a 77 and took sixth place. 

Chase McGatlin of Linn placed 12th after carding an 80 and Isaac Henderson of Maur Hill-Mount Academy finished 20th with an 85.
