The weekend was a busy one in the legion baseball scene for Northeast Kansas League teams as a pair of teams competed at the Marysville Classic, another had a non-league doubleheader and Sunday featured a pair of League twinbills. 

Sabetha earned their second tournament title of the season as they won the Marysville Classic beating the host Marysville with a 5-4 win in the tournament Championship game on Sunday. To get to the title game Sabetha beat Wamego 9-1 in the first round and topped Malcolm (NE) 13-5 in the Semifinals. Corning was also part of the Marysville Classic tournament and fell in the first round 8-0 to the host Marysville moving into the consolation bracket. Corning took on Concordia and fell 8-0 in the consolation Semifinals and then beat Wamego 4-1 in the seventh place game to finish the tournament. 

On Saturday, Oskaloosa snagged a pair of wins over Maur Hill's summer baseball team in non-league action winning 13-0 and 4-2. 

Sunday featured a pair of NEKL doubleheaders as Seneca and Doniphan County split and Silver Lake swept Leavenworth. Seneca earned a 12-7 win over Doniphan County, while DC bounced back with the 11-6 win in the nightcap. Silver Lake took down Leavenworth 14-0 and 9-1. 

Sabetha Wins Marysville Classic, While Corning Competes

Sabetha and Corning traveled to Marysville for tournament action starting back on Friday and for Sabetha it marked the second tournament title this season. 

Action opened up on Friday for Sabetha in the tournament with a 9-1 win over Wamego in the first round of the Marysville Classic. A five-run first inning got Sabetha rolling early and they added three in the third to cruise to the win in five innings. Braden Argabright, Blake Frey and Seth Burdick each had a pair of hits leading a 10-hit day for Sabetha, while Argabright chipped in three RBI's. Joe Gruber earned the win on the mound tossing four innings giving up just three hits in the win. 

In the Semifinals Sabetha wasted no time getting rolling early with a seven run first inning as eight consecutive guys reached base after a pair of outs in the first. Another run came across for Sabetha in the second, making it 8-0 but Malcolm got right back into the contest with a five-run bottom of the second cutting the Sabetha lead to three. Two runs in the third and fifth innings each and another run in the sixth allowed Sabetha to secure the win in six innings, 13-5. Trevor Kramer tossed all six innings giving up five runs on eight hits to earn the win, while Gruber led the offense with three hits and three runs scored. Burdick, Mason Spellmeier and Gabe Garber each chipped in two hits. 

The host Marysville stood in front of Sabetha in the Championship game and the pitching of Brayden Becker helped guide Sabetha to the 5-4 win holding off Marysville down the stretch for the win. Becker tossed a complete game giving up four runs on seven hits but struck out 10 including the final batter, while Marysville had the tying run in scoring position at second base. Sabetha took the early lead and led 4-0 entering the bottom of the fourth as Sabetha manufactured their runs several ways only recording three hits on the day. Marysville battled to the end recording three straight hits with two-outs in the seventh but Becker's 10th strikeout finished the game. Sabetha with the 3-0 performance is now 9-3 on the season and will host Falls City on Tuesday, June 13th to continue their season. 

For Corning in the Marysville Classic it was an opening round 8-0 loss to the host Marysville. Marysville led 3-0 after the first inning and despite both teams only mustering six hits each Marysville took advantage of other base runners to earn the win. Kobe Rumbo led Corning with two hits in the loss, while Dustin Talley tossed five innings in the loss. In the consolation Semifinals Corning took on Concordia and suffered the 7-0 loss as they were unable to register a hit in the contest. With the loss Corning moved into the seventh place game where they played Wamego to wrap up the tournament and earned their first win of the season 4-1. Corning plated two runs in the first inning to take the early lead and used two more runs in the fifth to secure the win, out-hitting Wamego 9-2 in the win. Dalton Boeckman, Cooper Deters and Collin Holthaus each had two hits for Corning, while Jackson Glessner tossed five innings for the win giving up just one run on one hitwith four strikeouts. 

Corning is now 1-7 on the season and will be back in action on Wednesday, June 14th as they host Sabetha. 

Seneca & Doniphan County Split League Twinbill

Over the past four years Doniphan County and Seneca have played some tight ballgames and even baseball splitting 18 games in the last four seasons and on Sunday the teams split a doubleheader. Seneca took game one 12-7, while Doniphan County responded with a 11-6 game two win. 

Seneca struck first in game one as Lucas Schraad led the game off with a double and a two-out two RBI double by Trevor Holthaus gave Seneca the 2-0 lead. Doniphan County tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the second as a Reid Greaser two RBI single tied the game. The lead swung to Doniphan County for the first time in the bottom of the fourth as eight guys came to the plate and produced three runs aided by three Seneca errors in the inning making it 5-2. Doniphan County starter Bryson Kirkland was pitching solid after the first inning until Seneca chased him out of the contest with a big top of the sixth. Six runs in the sixth gave Seneca the lead again as a two RBI double by Paul Enneking and two RBI single by Mitchell Henry highlighted the frame. Doniphan County got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth and had an opportunity to tie the game or retake the lead but entered the seventh down 8-7. Seneca added insurance runs in the seventh scoring four runs and secured the 12-7 win. 

Dalton Hiltbrand went the first six innings for Seneca giving up seven runs on 13 hits, two walks, a hit batter and four strikeouts and was 2-5 with an RBI to earn McDonald's "Player of the Game" on KNZA. Derek Uphaus tossed the final inning, while Enneking was 2-4 with three RBI's, two runs scored with a double and Trenton Henry was 2-4 with three runs scored. In the loss Kirkland went five and one-third giving up eight runs on eight hits, a walk, hit batter and five strikeouts, while Brody Winder was 3-4 and Tyler Franken and Kirkland each had two hits. 

Game two saw Seneca take the early lead with a run in the second and then two more in the third including a two RBI double for Hiltbrand to lead 3-0. In the bottom of the third Doniphan County took the lead with four runs with a pair of RBI singles by Wil Smith and Chris Winkel in the inning. Doniphan County added four runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth while Seneca managed two runs in the fifth and another in the seventh but came up short as Doniphan County secured the 11-6 win. 

Greaser tossed all seven innings giving up six runs on nine hits, four walks and struck out four earning the win, while Smith was 3-3 with three RBI's, a double, three runs scored and a walk to lead the Doniphan County offense. Winkel, Zeb Speer and Kirkland each had two hits as Doniphan County moved to 6-2 on the season. Doniphan County will be back in action on Tuesday, June 13th at home versus Leavenworth. 

Seneca with the split moved to 3-2 on the year and was led by Hiltbrand in the loss as he was 3-4 with a double, three RBI's and a run scored. Seneca is set to host Silver Lake on Tuesday, June 13th for their next action. 

Silver Lake Sweeps Leavenworth in NEKL Doubleheader

Silver Lake cruised to a pair of wins over Leavenworth in League action on Sunday winning 14-0 and 9-1. 

Game one Silver Lake out-hit Leavenworth 10-2 on the way to the 14-0 four inning win. The big output for Silver Lake came to the tune of an 11-run top of the second inning. Brady Snook had two hits and four RBI's to lead Silver Lake's offense, while Justin Keller and Joey Clark each chipped in two hits. 

It was 1-1 in game two after the second inning but a three third and fourth inning by Silver Lake guided them to the 9-1 win over Leavenworth. Josh Boyd had a three hit day with two RBI's for Silver Lake, while Garret Huske and Clark each added two hits. In the loss Jacob Emerson tossed six innings for Leavenworth. 

The pair of wins moves Silver Lake to 5-1 on the season, while Leavenworth falls to 1-5. Silver Lake and Leavenworth both hit the diamond again on Tuesday, June 13th as Silver Lake will travel to Seneca and Leavenworth travels to Doniphan County. 

Oskaloosa Sweeps Maur Hill In Non-League Action

In another showdown with Maur Hill's summer baseball team Oskaloosa earned a pair of wins picking up the 13-0 and 4-2 win on Saturday. 

Using a six-run top of the first Oskaloosa took control early against Maur Hill and scored three in the second, one in the third and three the fourth to win the game in four innings 13-0, while out-hitting Maur Hill 11-1 in the contest. Dawson Gatzemeyer, Thad Willits and Diego Cervantez each recorded two hits for Oskaloosa, while Cervantez added three RBI's to his day. 

Despite a 10-4 advantage in hits for Oskaloosa game two proved to be a tight one and late runs in the contest were needed for the 4-2 win. Oskaloosa took the lead 1-0 with a run in the third but Maur Hill scored two in the fourth to lead 2-1. It remained 2-1 until the top of the seventh when Oskaloosa scored a run to tie the game forcing extras were in the top of the eighth two more runs were scored by Oskaloosa to earn the 4-2 win. Cervantez and Hunter Reed each registered three hits for Oskaloosa, while Gatzemeyer tossed six innings recording 11 strikeouts on the mound. 

The two wins moved Oskaloosa to 5-3 on the season. Oskaloosa will be in action again Thursday, June 15th hosting Leavenworth.
