Legion baseball season rolled along on Tuesday with a pair of Northeast Kansas League doubleheaders and a non-league contest for another NEKL team. 

Doniphan County picked up the sweep over Leavenworth at home winning 5-4 and 19-4, while Silver Lake won a pair on the road over Seneca 12-5 and 8-1 in League action. Sabetha was in non-league play and earned the 8-3 win at home over Falls City. 

Action continues in the NEKL for legion baseball on Wednesday as Sabetha travels to Corning for a doubleheader starting at 6:00pm (6:00pm game will be broadcasted on 103.9 KNZA), while Doniphan County travel to Falls City for a junior and senior legion contest. 

Doniphan County Claims Pair of Wins Over Leavenworth

It was a tale of two different games when Doniphan County and Leavenworth squared off on Tuesday night in Wathena but the outcome was the same in each as Doniphan County picked up two wins, 5-4 and 19-4. 

Leavenworth took the initial lead in game one working the bases loaded in the first on two singles and a walk and on a fielder's choice snagged the 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the first Doniphan County responded with two runs as Wil Smith and Brody Winder produced a two-out RBI double and RBI single, respectively. Top of the third say Leavenworth tie the contest at 2-2 and it remained that way until the fifth despite Doniphan County having two on with no outs in the third and fourth inning. In the top of the fifth Leavenworth regained the lead on an RBI double from Austin Wiley and led 3-2. That lead was short lived again as Doniphan County answered in the bottom of the fifth as Winder delivered a two-out two RBI double two give Doniphan the 4-3 lead. A pair of singles, a walk and error tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth as Leavenworth scratched another across the board. But just as they had all game Doniphan County had an answer working the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth and on a Reid Greaser fielder's choice scored the ultimate winning run. Leavenworth managed to work the bases loaded in the top of the seventh on an error, hit batter and walk but a double play ended the game to lift Doniphan County to the 5-4 win. 

Leading Doniphan County in the win at the plate was Winder who went 2-3 with three RBI's and a double to earn McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on KNZA, while Greaser was 1-2 with two runs scored, an RBI and two walks. Zeb Speer was solid in the start for Doniphan going five and one-third innings giving up four runs on eight hits, four walks and five strikeouts, while Smith pitched the final inning and two-thirds. 

In the loss Leavenworth was led by Reid Herken on the mound who tossed six innings surrendering five runs on eight hits, six walks and eight strikeouts, while Tanner Morris was 2-3 and Jacob Emerson went 1-3 with two runs score and a walk. 

Game two was tight early as Leavenworth plated two in the top of the first and Doniphan County responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Doniphan County added another run in the second and then an RBI single by Morris for Leavenworth tied the game at 3-3 in the third. The bottom of the third saw an outburst of offense for Doniphan County as they batted around twice in the inning scoring 16 runs on 11 hits in the frame. The inning was highlighted by a two RBI triple by Speer, two RBI double by Greaser and two RBI single by Levi Watts. Leavenworth managed a run in the top of the fourth but ultimately fell 19-4. 

In the loss Leavenworth had four pitchers see action, while Emerson led the offense going 1-2 with two runs scored with a double and a hit by pitch. The losses moved Leavenworth to 1-7 on the season. 

Watts earned the win on the mound for Doniphan County giving up four runs on six hits, two hit batters and four strikeouts in four innings. Offensively Doniphan pounded out 15 hits including a 3-3 game for Tyler Franken who had two RBI's, two runs scored and was hit by a pitch, while Speer was also 3-3 with a triple, three runs scored and three RBI's. Greaser, Smith and Chris Winkel each recorded two hits in the win. The pair of wins moved Doniphan County to 8-2 on the year.

Silver Lake Takes Two On the Road Over Seneca

Strong performances propelled Silver Lake to a pair of wins on the road against Seneca earning the 12-5 and 8-1 victories. 

Game one saw both teams get on the board early as Silver Lake tallied a run in the top of the first and Seneca answered with two runs to lead 2-1 after one frame, getting the runs on a pair of solo home runs by Luke Reitz and Dalton Hiltbrand. In the second inning Silver Lake took control producing six runs on five hits and a walk all with two-outs including a two RBI double by Josh Boyd and two-run homer by Justin Keller. Seneca got a pair of runs back with a Trevor Holthaus solo homer run in the fourth and then another run in the fifth making it 7-4. In the top of the seventh Silver Lake put things out of reach plating five runs to cement the 12-5 win. 

Silver Lake in the win was led by Garret Huske who went 3-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Keller was 2-3 with a two-run homer, three RBI's and two runs scored. Wyatt Heiman, Boyd, Joey Clark and Jake Lindstrom each added a two-hit day, while Lindstrom tossed six innings to earn the win giving up four runs on six hits, four walks and five strikeouts. 

Seneca in the loss blasted three solo home runs by Reitz, Holthaus and Hiltbrand but Dalton had the only multi-hit day going 3-3 with an RBI and run scored. On the mound Paul Enneking gave up nine runs on 11 hits, two walks and four strikeouts. 

Game two saw Seneca take the early 1-0 but using a four-run third and fifth inning Silver Lake snagged the 8-1 win as they out-hit Seneca 10-4 in the contest. Kyle Frick was strong on the mound earning the win for Silver Lake tossing five innings giving up one run on four hits and struck out 10, while Derek Uphaus took the loss for Seneca going the distance. Huske once again led Silver Lake's offense going 3-3 with two doubles, while Heiman had a two-hit game. Seneca got hits by Reitz, Hiltbrand, Lucas Schraad and Enneking. 

The pair of losses moves Seneca to 3-3 on the season, while Silver Lake with the two wins improved to 5-1 on the year. 

Sabetha Continues Strong Play Topping Falls City

Riding momentum off the Marysville Classic tournament Sabetha continued their strong play this legion baseball season with a non-league win over Falls City on Tuesday night at home 8-3. 

Sabetha grabbed the early lead going up 2-0 in the second using four walks and a Blake Frey RBI single but Falls City cut into the lead with a run in the fourth making it 2-1. A pair of errors in the fourth inning by Falls City helped Sabetha get four runs on the board in the inning and take control of the game as Brett Stallbaumer and Seth Burdick each had RBI singles in the inning. Joe Gruber added a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth for another Sabetha run and the Raptors earned the 8-3 win. 

Leading the way for the Sabetha Raptors on the night was Gruber who had a three-hit game including his home run and tossed six innings to earn the win striking out nine in the process. 

The win moves Sabetha to 10-3 overall on the season.
