A trio of Northeast Kansas League legion baseball teams were in action on Wednesday as Corning hosted Sabetha in League play and Doniphan County traveled to Falls City for a non-league showdown. 

Sabetha earned the sweep in Corning winning 13-1 in six innings and 4-0, while Doniphan County topped Falls City 4-0. 

The League season continues on Thursday night with Oskaloosa hosting Leavenworth for a League twinbill. 

Sabetha Sweeps Corning In League Action

The legion baseball season continued with League play on Wednesday for Sabetha and Corning and at the end of the night Sabetha snagged two wins on the road winning 13-1 in six innings and 4-0. 

Corning took the initial lead in game one on two hits and two walks in the bottom of the first as an RBI infield single by Josh Hasenkamp gave them the 1-0 lead but the bases were left loaded in the frame, also. Sabetha broke through in the third as Riley Hermann led the frame off with a solo home run and the Raptors added two more in the frame to lead 3-1. The score double for Sabetha in the fourth with three more runs scoring on two hits, a walk and two Corning errors. Things broke open for Sabetha in the sixth as they batted around scoring seven runs highlighted by a pair of two-run homers by Preston Bruning and Joe Gruber. Corning managed base runners throughout the game but only scored one leaving 11 guys on base in the contest as Sabetha won 13-1 in six innings. 

Bruning led Sabetha offensively going 3-4 with a two-run homer and earned McDonald's "Player of the Game" honors on KNZA, while Brett Stallbaumer, Kyle Grimm and Hermann each had a two-hit game. Grimm started the game on the mound and struggled giving up some walks and Mason Spellmeier entered the contest to toss the final four innings and stymied the Corning offense giving up no runs on three hits, two walks and two strikeouts. 

In the loss Corning was led by Adam Kuckelman who had a 3-3 day, while Kobe Rumbo was 1-1 with two walks. Jackson Glessner took the loss tossing five and one-third innings. 

Game two started off quick for Sabetha as Hermann blasted his second homer of the night leading the second game off with the round tripper. Sabetha added two in the second on three hits and a hit batter and scored another in the fourth. While Corning struggle for base runners getting five hits and only one other base runner on a walk as Stallbaumer earned the win on the mound for Sabetha tossing four and two-thirds giving up just five hits and one walk, while striking out six helping Sabetha win 4-0. 

Rumbo led Corning in the loss going 2-2, while Noah Quigley was 1-1 with a walk as Corning fell to 1-9 on the season with the pair of losses. 

Sabetha with the wins moved to 11-3 on the season extending their winning streak to six-straight. Bruning led the offense again going 2-2 with a walk, RBI and run scored, while Frey was 2-3 and Hermann finished 1-1 with a home run, two runs scored, an RBI and two walks. 

Doniphan County Earns Non-League Win Over Falls City

Stepping outside of the league Doniphan County traveled to Falls City on Wednesday and earned their ninth win of the season topping Falls City 5-2. 

Leading just 2-1 entering the fifth inning Doniphan County used a walk and three hits to score three runs and extend their lead to 5-1. Falls City added a run in the sixth but Doniphan County held them off with the pitching of Brody Winder to earn the 5-2 win. Winder tossed a complete game giving up two runs on seven hits, three walks and struck out 13, while adding a 2-4 game at the plate with an RBI. Reid Greaser led the offense going 3-4 with two runs scored, while Tyler Franken chipped in a 2-4 day with an RBI and run scored and Wil Smith went 1-3 with two RBI. 

The win moves Doniphan County to 9-2 on the season.
