A pair of Northeast Kansas League legion baseball teams qualified for the AAA State tournament after winning the Zone and finishing runner-up.
Both Leavenworth and Oskaloosa saw their season end at the State tournament after just a few games as Leavenworth posted a 0-2 record in action, while Oskaloosa was 1-2 at State.
For Leavenworth after winning their Zone they opened the AAA State tournament with a matchup against Nickerson and fell down early in the game trailing 11-0 after three innings but managed to get on the board with six runs before falling 14-6 in five innings in the first round contest. On Thursday in an elimination showdown with Chanute it was a struggle for Leavenworth as they managed only two-hits and fell 10-0 in six innings.
The two losses ended Leavenworth’s season with a 4-19 record as they went 0-2 at State.
Oskaloosa started their trip to the AAA State tournament in strong fashion with a 1-0 combined no-hit victory over Ark City in the first round. Seth Coltrane and Dante Nelson combined to toss a no-hitter for Oskaloosa they managed one run on just five hits to earn the 1-0. Nathan Buss and Coltrane each had two-hits in the contest. In the next contest in the winner’s bracket Hays stood in front of Oskaloosa and despite an early 1-0 lead Hays earned the 10-3 win. Hays scored four-runs in the second and seventh innings to earn the win. Four errors and only three-hits offensively hurt Oskaloosa in the loss. On Friday in an elimination contest Oskaloosa took on Chanute and bowed out of the State tournament with a 9-1 five inning loss. Each team tallied a run in the first inning and it remained 1-1 until the top of the fifth inning when Chanute worked the bases loaded and blasted a grand slam to take the 5-1 advantage and ultimately won 9-1 in five innings.
With a 1-2 performance at State Oskaloosa wrapped up their season finishing 17-13.
