The final week of the regular season is upon us in the high school football season and for some teams there is plenty to play for as they are still in contention for the postseason, while for others they are already know they will continue their year in the playoffs or some teams are just looking to cap the season with a win to head into the offseason.

As we head into the final week of the regular season five area teams find themselves ranked in at least one poll in the State in their Classification.

Class 3A top spot has belonged to the Nemaha Central Thunder football team just about every week in all the polls across the year and this week the Thunder continue to sit atop the perch of #1 in 3A. Nemaha Central is 8-0 after a 49-0 win over Riverside in week eight and locked up the District title in the process of the win and head into week nine looking to cap their third straight regular season with an unbeaten mark. Sabetha, Marysville and Perry Lecompton continue to get looks in the 3A polls this week and all have the potential to be in the postseason. The Bluejays are 7-1 after throttling Hiawatha last week and are in a win and you're in situation in week nine for a playoff bid, while Marysville is also 7-1 after a route of Minneapolis and are in the playoffs and vie for the District title against Riley County in week nine. Perry Lecompton fell to 5-3 last week with a tough five-point loss to unbeaten Silver Lake but with a win this week against Oskaloosa the Kaws will be in the playoffs.

The #1 spot from the start of the season has in 8-Man Division II has belonged to the Hanover Wildcats who continue to dominate their opponents winning by point-rule again in week eight with a 62-12 win over Wakefield. Hanover sits at 8-0 on the season and have locked up a playoff spot and vie for District title with Axtell in week nine. The Eagles are getting attention in the 8-Man DII polls sitting a 6-2 after beating Blue Valley last week 62-12 and are locked in the playoffs with a chance to upset Hanover for the District title. In the 8-Man Division I scene the Clifton-Clyde Eagles are flying into the playoffs sitting at 7-1 on the season after beating Onaga last week and continue to get attention in the 8-Man DI rankings.

Three area teams are in the rankings in Class 2-1A sitting ranked in at least one poll entering the final week of the regular season. The Jefferson County North Chargers remain unbeaten at 8-0 after cruising past Troy 46-0 last week and rank as high as #2 in one poll and #3 in the others this week. The Chargers have locked up the District title and a home playoff game. Jackson Heights Cobras took down Horton 36-12 to remain unbeaten at 8-0 and check in at #5 in three polls this week. The Cobras are in the playoffs but have a big battle with Centralia for the District title in week nine. Centralia Panthers head into that showdown with Jackson Heights at 6-2 after winning a tight 30-22 battle over Valley Heights last week and check in ranked #4 by Kpreps. The Panthers are back in the playoffs after seeing a 20-year streak of playoff appearances snapped last year.

Class 4A-Division II continues to see Holton garner attention in the rankings as the Wildcats are 5-3 on the season after a 27-13 loss to Hayden last week. The loss puts Holton in a must win situation against Santa Fe Trail this week for a playoff spot.
