KBCA Release Second Rankings -- 17 Area Teams are Ranked

Teams have hit the hardwood and the action has already started to heat up just a view games into season for area teams.

Kansas Basketball Coaches Association has released its second set of rankings first with at least one game in the books for teams across the state. Fourteen area teams started the season ranked on the preseason poll and after just a few games the number off area teams ranked as ballooned to 17.

Starting on the girls side of the rankings, in Class 4A two teams from the area are ranked. The Lady Wildcats of Holton opened the season with a loss but remain highly ranked at third, as their loss came to the number one team in 4A Wamego who is 2-0. The loss for Holton ended their 88-game regular season winning streak. Fellow Big Seven League team, Santa Fe Trail has leaped into the rankings checking in at number nine after season opening win over Anderson County, 63-40 were Amber Moore scored 29 points.

In Class 3A, the Lady Tigers of ACCHS remained in the rankings as they check in at number seven in the rankings after a 51-24 win at home against Perry Lecompton.

Class 2A, the preseason rankings had Jefferson County North number one and Washington County number two, but that has slightly changed. The Lady Chargers fell off the top spot after a loss to open the season as they fell against 4A, Baldwin. JCN led at the half 27-23 but fell in the contest 56-43. Junior, Jacee Kramer lead the way for the Lady Chargers with 21 points. Washington County opened the season up with three straight wins in their preseason tournament using double figure games from Erin Alexander and Samantha L'Ecuyer.

For Class 1A-Division I, the Valley Heights Mustangs jumped into the rankings after a road win against Twin Valley League foe Centralia, 65-53 with two players tallying 20 plus points.

In Class 1A-Division II, the area teams didn't move in the rankings with Wetmore staying put at number three and Baileyville-B&B at number four after multiple wins to start the year for each team. For the Lady Cardinals they were lead in scoring by senior, Alayna Noe who totaled 38 points in the Cardinals first two wins of the season. While for the Lady Falcons they went 3-0 at their home Falcons Classic, using multiple double figure games from multiple players including three double digit games from Laura Sudbeck including two double-doubles.

On the boys side, three area teams are ranked in the Class 4A, 3A and 2A rankings while six area teams are ranked in the Class 1A-Division I and II rankings.

In Class 4A, the Holton Wildcat boys remained ranked after a season opening loss to Wamego, 47-32. Wildcats are ranked eighth in the latest KBCA rankings. Tyler Burdiek lead the way with 11 points in the loss for Holton.

Class 3A, the Nemaha Valley Raiders jumped up one spot in the rankings to number two after beating Hanover, 57-38 on the road. Junior, Caleb Meyer lead the team in scoring with 14 points, while senior, Trent Olberding had 13 himself in the win.

For Class 2A, the Jefferson County North Chargers remained in the rankings despite opening the season with a loss at home as they fell to a 4A school in Baldwin, 63-43.

Class 1A is stacked with area teams as six teams are ranked in Division I and II. In Division I, the Valley Heights Mustangs took a big leap from being unranked to checking in at fourth this week after beating Centralia on the road, 48-38. Centralia remained in the rankings despite the loss coming in at number five, while Hanover checked in at number six after to a loss to the second ranked 3A team in Nemaha Valley.

In Division II, number seven, eight and nine are all area teams in the rankings. Axtell after starting the year off non-ranked and winning three first three games of the year jumped into the rankings at number seven. Eagles went perfect 3-0 at the Falcons Classic including a 43-36 win over B&B; senior Aaron Schmelzle lead the way with multiple double figure nights. Frankfort Wildcats, fell from number two to the eighth spot as they opened the season with a loss but to a tough Pawnee City team, 62-51. While, Baileyville-B&B has opened the season up 2-1 with lone loss to Axtell they check in at ninth, falling a few spots this week.
