Wetmore & B&B Girls Win to Set Up Rematch of Last Year's Sub-State Finals
By Mike Smith

Class 1A-Division II Girls Sub-State Semifinals:

Wetmore 69, Frankfort 52

Baileyville-B&B 47, Axtell 33

Coming into the game the teams were worried about rust and sluggish start after layoffs from their last games, that layoff didn't affect Wetmore and Frankfort early on as they traded blows from the start back and forth. Towards the end of the first quarter things started to shift Wetmore's way as they pushed themselves to a seven-point lead, 21-14 after the first quarter.

Cardinals continued to play aggressive forcing turnovers on the Wildcats and draining shots including seven total three-pointers in the contest. Using a 19-8 second period and holding Frankfort to only two points from the free throw line until 2:40 left to go in the first half, Wetmore saw their lead balloon to 20-plus points and lead it 40-22 at the half.

Teams played just about an even second half, allowing Wetmore to gain the 69-52 win and move to the sub-state championship at 6:00pm on Saturday.

Quartet of scorers paced the way for the Cardinals as they had contributions from just about everyone who saw action. Senior, Jordan Evans lead Wetmore on the night with 17 points, hitting on three three-pointers in the contest. Senior, Dana Kramer added a 14 point night while senior, Amber Meggison and junior, Brianna Boden each chipped in 12 points.

Frankfort in the loss was lead by their senior tandem of Jessa Jones and Josie Hale who tallied 20 and 15 points, respectively on the night.

With the win Wetmore improves to 14-8 on the season and puts themselves one win away from making a return visit to the state tournament in Hays. While, Frankfort with the loss ends their season at 13-8 falling in the sub-state semifinals for the second straight year.

In the night cap it was the B&B Falcons facing off with the Axtell Eagles to decide the second half of the sub-state championship game. Falcons flew out to a 10-point lead at the half over Axtell 27-17 behind the stellar play of junior, Laura Sudbeck who scored 22 points on the night, tallying 17 in the first half.

Axtell tired to mount a run to start the second half, holding B&B scoreless for around four minutes in the third quarter, but the Eagles offense continued to snag and the Falcons would outscored the Eagles by five in the second half, to grab the 47-33 win.

Falcons on the night were lead by Laura Sudbeck with her stellar scoring night, while she finished with a double-double with 11 rebounds on the night. Junior, Ashley Kramer added double figures with 12 points, hitting 8-10 free throws in the contest.

Axtell in the loss had eight players score but no one in the double figure mark as freshman, Courtney Heinen lead the Eagles with eight points.

With the win B&B improves to 19-3 on the season and moves to the sub-state championship game for the second straight year. While, Axtell with the loss finishes their season 10-12, seven wins better than last season for the Eagles.

B&B and Wetmore wins set up a rematch of the sub-state championship game from last season which Wetmore won 39-30 to advance to the state tournament in Class 1A-Division II.
