Highland Softball Makes National Tournament for Fifth Straight Year

Going into the weekend the #8 Highland Scotties were looking to earn their fifth straight bid to the NJCAA Division II national tournament in Mississippi and that they did rattling off three wins to capture the District E softball tournament title and earn a spot in the national tournament.

Highland opened action on Saturday by taking down Kansas City KS CC in a 4-1 win, using a three-run fifth inning to secure the game in their favor and ultimately grab the win. Emily Clontz and Holly Wilmarth led the Scotties offense each going 2-3 at the plate. Clontz had a double, run scored and an RBI, while Wilmarth had a triple, run scored and two RBI.

The day continued with a matchup against Independence CC and the Scotties earned the 7-5 win to move one win shy of another return to the national tournament. Highland utilized a four-run first inning to take the early lead and added three-runs in the fourth to secure the win. Clontz again had a solid performance has she led the Scottie offense with a 3-4 performance with a pair of runs scored. While, Kaley Pyles and Wilmarth each had a pair of RBI's.

On Sunday the Scotties awaited the winner of the Independence CC and Kansas City KS CC in an elimination game, needing just one win to win the District title. Independence topped KCKCC 6-3 to take on the Scotties for the second time over the weekend and Highland picked up the 6-3 win to win the District title. Highland used another big inning to help them secure the win using a four-run second inning after falling behind 1-0 after the first inning. Taylor Zimmerman led the Scotties offense going 2-4 with two runs scored, while Emma Hill went 1-4 with a runs scored and two RBI and Allyne Clark was 1-2 with run scored and two RBI.

With the 3-0 weekend the Scotties improved to 40-9 on the season and will continue their year in the national tournament for the fifth straight year. National tournament starts on May 14th through the 17th at Traceway Park in Clinton, Mississippi.
