Troy Trojan, Tristan Speer Dominates on the Mats on Way to State Title
Tristan Speer

Finishing a season with an unblemished record is one tough task no matter what sport you partake in and what level you compete and Troy Trojan junior, Tristan Speer accomplished that feat on the mats this year winning the state title at 195lb weight class in 3-2-1A.

Speer displayed dominance on the mat all year posting a 36-0 record on his way to his State title and 31 of his 36 wins came via pinfall throughout the season. Last year Speer took home fourth place at State at 195lbs and finished the season 32-7.

At State, Tristan opened the competition by making quick work of his first opponent winning by pinfall in just 43 seconds and followed that up with a win in the second round by pin in 3:57 to make the semifinals. In the semifinals, Speer outdueled his opponent to a 5-2 decision win and capped of the State competition with a 6-1 win in the championship bout.

During the season, Speer wrestled with the Doniphan West Mustangs wrestling squad and helped the team have plenty of success as he took home first place showings at the Osawatomie, Silver Lake and Tonganoxie Invite’s, while his team placed sixth, seventh and fourth at those tournaments. At Regionals Speer posted a 4-0 record, topping all his opponents by pin.

The junior has been enjoying the success on the mats all season while also helping Troy on the basketball court and now with a season to remember on the mats in the rear view mirror he turns his full attention back to the hardwood and looks for more hardware to add to the trophy cases.
