Sabetha Boys Golf Claims Elusive Class 3A State Title

The last two years the Sabetha Bluejays boy’s golf team had been on the cusp of making school history and winning their first sate golf title but finished third place two years ago and were state runner-ups in 2012.

This year the Bluejays and Coach Randy Hall had their had their sights set on making a return trip to state and vying for that elusive state title in Class 3A, which would be their first since 1968 which came in the Sands Green competition (Sabetha won four-man title in 1968 and two-man title in 1965). After another stellar regular season of golf action for the Bluejays they captured their Class 3A regional team championship to head back to state were they accomplished that elusive feat that eluded them the past couple of years. Bluejays took home the Class 3A state title after registering a score of 336, three strokes better than Hays-TMP who took second place.

2013 Sabetha Boys Golf Class 3A State Champs (Photo courtesy of Sabetha Herald)Senior, Nolan Keim coming off a knee injury suffered early in his senior athletic campaign lead the charge for the Bluejays tallying a 79 on the day good for fifth place individually. Tyler Ulrich, Kevan Herbster and Derek Halls joined Keim to compile the Bluejays four-man team score of 336, after they carded rounds of 81, 85 and 91, respectively. Ulrich tied for twelfth with his round, while Herbster tied for forty eighth and tie for forty eighth for Halls. Darrin Wenger and Brock Frey also competed at the state competition for the Bluejays registering rounds of 109 and 111 to tie for ninetieth and ninety fourth, respectively.

While, Sabetha’s season culminated in the ultimate prize of a state championship it was highlighted by multiple great performances. Bluejays won their Regional competition, won the Rossville Invite, Big Seven League Quad with Jeff West, Nemaha Valley and Royal Valley and also the Sabetha Invite.

In Regional competition Sabetha took home the best team score registering a 332 with Keim leading the way with an individual first place by shooting a 72. His teammates, Tyler Ulrich, Darrin Wenger and Kevan Herbster each carded a top 10 round, too finishing third, seventh and ninth, respectively.

Early in the season the Bluejays hosted their home Invitational and had the best six-man and two-man team scores, as well as best individual score and second best four-man team score. Keim, yet again put forth the best individual round posting a 72, 11 strokes better than second place, while Ulrich partnered with him to post the best 2-man score of the day, 156. Herbster, Halls, Wenger and Frey comprised the Sabetha four-man team which finished second but partnered with Keim and Ulrich to field the best six-man team score.

In a year of champions for the Kanzaland area the Sabetha Bluejays boys golf team accomplished something a Kanzaland area team hasn’t done since 1997 when Holton won Class 4A and in Class 3A since 1995 when Nemaha Valley, that is win a state title. Finally all the hard work for the Bluejays over the past few years pushed them to cap of this season with a state title.
