Hiawatha & Other Area Schools Highlight Atchison Track & Field Invite

After postponing the meet one day, six area schools competed in the Atchison Invitational along with five other schools from Kansas and Missouri competed on Friday in the meet.

Highlighting the action on the day was a dominating performance by the Hiawatha Redhawks track and field squad with 12 individual first place finishes between the girls and boys on the day, with many multi-event winners.

It was a freshman for the Redhawks that lead the way on the day as Emily Gartner swept the throwing competitions, tossing her way to wins in the shot put, discus and javelin. Gartner took home the shot put crown by topping a top Big Seven league thrower in Holton's, Kyrstie Miller by just about eight inches, as Gartner registered a throw of 36-08.25. In the discus throw she topped in first mark of the year by four feet with a toss of 122-01 to win first place by nearly 11 feet at the Atchison Invite. Emily swept the throwing competitions with a 109-10 toss in the javelin throw, a total of 20 feet better than second place.

Hiawatha's top performances didnt' stop there as Jordan Puvogel, Denzel Chilcoat, Josh Hinkle, Conner Bigham and Brendan Steele all won at least two gold medals on the day. For Puvogel she took the distance runs of 1600 and 3200 meters; doing so in impressive fashion, beating second place by nearly 29 seconds in the 1600 (5:28.77) and by around 42 seconds in the 3200 (12:42.78).

On the boys side it was Chilcoat sweeping the sprint competitions winning the 100 and 200 meter dashes with times of 11.44 and 23.25, respectively. Denzel was also a part of the Hiawatha's first place 4x400 meter relay team (3:41.93) which included Conner Bigham, Joey Ross and Brendan Steele, also. Both, Bigham and Steele took home other event titles, too as Conner won the 400 meter dash (53.59) and Steele won the long jump (19-04). Hinkle was the other Redhawk on the day to take home two gold medals as he won both the shot put and discus with tosses fo 46-05.25 and 137-00, respectively.

Juniors, Shawn Green and Tyler Boeckman also got in the mix both winning an event, too for the Redhawks on the day. Green took home the javelin throw title with a toss of 135-01, giving the Redhawks a compete sweep of the throwing competitions on the day. Boeckman took home the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:43.79, topping second place by nearly 24 seconds.

Another Big Seven League school took home a big haul at the Atchison Invite, as the Holton Wildcats took home seven first place finishes. Senior, Connor Strader lead the way as she took home a pair of gold medals winning both the 400 meter dash (1:01.11) and the 800 meter run (2:33.68). The only other lady Wildcat to capture a first place finish was Hanah Suarez who took home first in the triple jump with a leap of 32-00.

On the boys side for the Wildcats, Cameron Karn won a pair of events taking home both the triple jump and 300 meter hurdles titles. Karn won the triple jump behind a leap of 40-03.50 and the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 43.34. Brenden Hampton and Dakota Colhouer each also won a gold medal for the Wildcats, winning the 110 meter hurdles (16.258) and pole vault (8-06), respectively.

Atchison, Immaculata and ACCHS each had at least one first place finish on the day, also. For the host Redman it was four first place finishes with three coming on the girls side of competition. Sierra Smith took home the 200 meter dash crown behind a time of 27.28, while also being a part of Atchison's 4x100 meter relay first place team (52.27) with Akiela Gill, Imogene Bratton and Mady Shipley. Shipley like Smith also won another events taking the pole vault title (9-00). On the boys side it was Blake Dykstra winning the other gold on the day for Atchison, by winning the 800 meter run (2:09.59).

For, Immaculata Sarah O'Neil highlighted the day by sweeping the girls hurdles competitions, winning the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.55 and the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 54.24.

The Tigers of ACCHS took home one first place finish as their girls 4x800 meter relay team of Madison Bissell, Tiffany Gillmore, Beba Scholz and Lillie Holtgrave ran to a time of 11:08.68 to capture first place.
