Onaga Takes Fourth & Jeff West Tenth at Herington Wrestling Invite

Both the Onaga Buffaloes and Jeff West Tigers both squared off with 12 other teams at the Herington Invitational in their first action on the mats since the Holiday break.

It was a top flight performance by Onaga as the Buffaloes wrestled their way to a fourth place finish posting 129 points to earn fourth, while Jeff West took home tenth as a team with 55 total points on the day. Abilene earned first place as a team with 257 total points, while Wamego and Chapman finished second and third with 172 and 170 points, respectively.

Kyle Ames led the charge for Onaga on the day as he earned a tournament title at 182lbs posting a 4-0 record on the day. Ames opened the day with a pinfall win in 16 seconds in the first round and followed that up in the quarterfinals with another pinfall win, coming in 1:20. In the semifinals, Ames registered his third pinfall win over the day this time in 2:55 to advance to the Championship bout. In the Championship match Ames had his hands full, but wrestled to the 2-0 decision win to earn the 182lbs title.

The Buffaloes also had a second place performer on the day as Dominic Buterakos notched a second place performance going 3-1 at 120lbs. Buterakos won the opening round with a pin in 1:35, then won via pin (3:11) in the quarterfinals and in the semifinals picked up the 7-2 decision win. In the Championship bout Buterakos fell by an 8-3 decision to finish second place.

Three Onaga Buffaloes earned third place finishes at the Herington Invitational as Trenton Ross (126lbs), Garrett Ames (170lbs) and Dustin Blow (195lbs) each earned third place. Ross posted a 3-1 record, while Ames finished 4-1 on the day and Blow tallied a 3-1 record. Jonathan Fairbanks (126lbs) took home fourth place after falling to Ross in the 126lbs third place match and posted a 4-2 record.

Tharrin D'Aloia (106lbs), Brandon Merriman (120lbs), Kosta Buterakos (132lbs), Jeffery Chestnut (138lbs) and Quentin Lara (195lbs) all also wrestled for Onaga and each earned a pair of wins on the day, while Kylar Schmitt (145lbs) also wrestled, as well.

For Jeff West it was a pair of second place performances that led the way for the best performances on the day. Nicholas Reeb (152lbs) and Sam Shenk (195lbs) both earned second place for the Tigers on the mat after posting records of 2-1 on the day. Reeb picked up a pinfall win (2:24) and major decision (10-2), while Shenk won his two matches by pin (:12) and 4-3 decision.

Chase Montgomery (160lbs) was the only other Tiger place in the Top four, taking fourth place after posting a 2-2 record. Montgomery's two wins were both via the pin (1:21 and 1:44).

Kody Gibson (120lbs) notched a pair of wins, going 2-2 on the mats for the Tigers in action. Mason Seals (220lbs), Cohl Bohannan (145lbs) , Branden Callahn (126lbs), Austin Michaelis (113lbs) and Luke Holloman (106lbs) all picked up one win on the day for the Tigers in their action, while Mason Heiden (170lbs) also competed on the day.

Jeff West takes to the mat again next Friday at the St. Mary's Invitational, while Onaga will hit the mats again on Saturday at the Russell Invitational.
