Jon Thomas Earns 350th Win as Nemaha Central Splits With ACCHS
By Jonny Kane

The Nemaha Central Thunder and ACCHS Tigers met in Effingham on Friday night for Big 7 League action and after the two teams went to battle it was the Lady Tigers taking the girls game 56-54 while the Thunder guys came away with a 58-28 win.

Girls: ACCHS 56, Nemaha Central 54

The girls game was another thriller as it began with ACCHS jumping out to a quick 13-8 lead after the first quarter. That 5 point lead for the Lady Tigers continued all the way into halftime as they took a 25-20 lead at the break. ACCHS then came out in the third quarter put on a strong offensive showing scoring 14 points in the quarter to extend the lead to 9 heading into the final quarter.

When the fourth quarter started it looked like the Lady Tigers were going to run away with it, but the Lady Thunder were able to keep within striking distance as the lead was 7 with 1:09 left. Nemaha Central was then able to knock in three straight three pointers by junior Rachel Baumgartner and senior Kennedy McKernan to trim the lead all the way down to 2 points with 10.9 seconds left. ACCHS then attempted to throw the ensuing inbound pass deep but the errant pass went out of bounds without a Lady Tiger touching it which meant that Nemaha would have it back under their own basket with 10.9 seconds left. This is when Lady Tiger senior Rachel Newquist made the biggest play of the night as Briana Delaney drove baseline and put up a potential game-tying shot for the Thunder but there was Newquist to swat it away to preserve the 56-54 victory for ACCHS.

The Lady Thunder were able to capitalize on the 8 ACCHS fourth quarter turnovers to give themselves a chance but Tiger senior Lillie Holtgrave connected on 16-19 from the free throw line to help move ACCHS to 7-2 on the season while Nemaha Central went to 5-4. In the win ACCHS was led in scoring by Holtgrave once again as she led all scorers with 22 points while junior Mallory Eckert chipped in 14 points on four treys. Nemaha Central was led in the loss by Rachel Baumgartner as the junior scored 16 points while Jaci Swart also had 10.

Boys: Nemaha Central 58, ACCHS 28

In the guys game it was all Thunder from the start as they took a 19-6 lead after one quarter and a 38-12 lead at the break. The trend of scoring 6 points a quarter continued for ACCHS in the third as Nemaha was able to extend their halftime lead to 56-18 heading into the final quarter. Nemaha Central then only scored 2 points in that fourth quarter but at that junction of the ballgame it was just too far out of reach for ACCHS as the Thunder came away with a 58-28 win.

In the win for Nemaha Central they were lead in scoring by Luke Holthaus as the junior led all scorers with 22 points while Devin Henry chipped in 12 to move the Thunder to 8-1 on the season. ACCHS is still searching for their first win of the season as they were led in scoring by Lane Bowen and Patick Sullivan who each chipped in 9 points.

The win for Nemaha Central was also win number 350 for Thunder head coach Jon Thomas who is in his 20th season with Nemaha as his team is currently ranked third in Class 3A.
