Marysville Wins Clay Center Wrestling Invite While Holton Has Top Performers

A pair of area teams took to the mats on Saturday at the Clay Center Invitational and both put together strong performances as Marysville won the tournament and Holton finished eighth out of 13 schools while having several top notch performances. 

Marysville won their second tournament title of the year in as many competitions as the Bulldogs posted 158 total points to edge Norton Community by 5.5 points. Holton posted 74 total points to claim eighth place as a team at the competition. 

A trio of first place finishes paced the Bulldogs on the mats at the Clay Center Invitational as Chris Deters (132lbs), Jacob Stryker (160lbs) and Jacob Mintzmyer (170lbs) all earned the top spot in their weight classes. Deters made light work of his competition going 5-0 on the day with three pinfall wins in 1:50, 43 seconds and 39 seconds and winning by technical fall also, while wrapping up the day in the first place match winning a tough 8-7 decision against a wrestler from Olathe Northwest high school. Stryker posted a 4-0 record on the day winning by a tiebreaker 3-2 in the championship bout against a grappler from Norton, while also notching a pinfall win in 4:46, a major decision win 12-4 and TB 13-7 win. Mintzmyer who like Deters is ranked in Class 3-2-1A rankings also finished first going 5-0 with a 4-3 decision win over a Clay Center wrestler in the championship bout at 170lbs, while also registering three pinfall wins on the day 2:34, 3:56 and 58 seconds and an 8-5 decision win. 

The Bulldogs didn't stop with their three first place finishers on the day as Bulldog wrestlers picked up two third places, four fourth places, a fifth place and a pair of sixth places. Caleb Vogelsberg and Jakob Snellings each picked up third place finishes for Marysville at 195lbs and 106lbs, respectively after each posting 3-2 records on the day. Ethan Crownover (120lbs), Derek Roever (138lbs), Nick Ackerman (182lbs) and Tristin Detimore (220lbs) all grabbed fourth place finishes notching records of 3-2, 2-2, 3-2 and 3-2, respectively. A fifth place finish was earned by Chance Hight who went 1-4 on the mats at 113lbs, while Skylar Widmer (126lbs) and Matt Lindhorst (152lbs) each finished sixth place behind 2-3 records on the mats at the Clay Center Invitational. 

Holton had four grapplers compete on the day at the Clay Center Invitational and they all had a third place finish or better. Both Justin Rieschick and Tel Wittmer won their weight classes of 145lbs and 220lbs, respectivley. Rieschick the number one ranked 4A grappler at 145lbs notched a 5-0 day on the mats beating a wrestler from Wabaunsee in the championship match by a close 3-2 decision, while registering other wins of a 11-5 decision, 12-6 decision, pinfall in 37 seconds and a technical fall win. Wittmer also registered a 5-0 day on the mats to win his weight class for Holton winning the championship bout by a 3-1 decision over a wrestler from Smoky Valley, while picking up his other wins by a 5-1 decision, 3-0 decision, 19-7 major decision and pinfall in 1:34. 

Kyler Tannahill grabbed a silver medal on the day finishing second at 195lbs for the Wildcats, falling by pinfall in the championship bout. Tannahill on the day finished 3-2 with both losses to the same grappler and picking up his three wins by pinfall in 1:12, 1:37 and 47 seconds. It was a third place finish for Wildcat grappler Tyler Price who posted a 3-1 record on the winning the third place match by pin in 2:03 over a wrestler from Wabaunsee and registering his other wins by pinfall in 42 and 29 seconds. 

The wrestling season continues for Holton on Thursday, December 17th as they travel to Sabetha to take on the Bluejays in a Big Seven dual, while Marysville continues their season on the mats on Thursday also against Concordia in a NCKL matchup.
